www.nafa.ca/18076China Dominates Muskrat Sale March 28, 2015 China once again dominated the muskrat sale, with support from North America. North American hat makers continue to supply the RCMP, and now, the Canadian military. Korea did not participate in this sale and are now buying muskrat plates from China. Overall, prices were down 5-10% from NAFA’s January sale. Please click the link below for the full sales report. www.nafa.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-03-28-WF-ENG.pdf

One can tell the market is poor when far better rats sell for less 2 months later, but then that is what we anticipate in a wholesale commodity market. I looked at my last 3 year averages, 12, 13, 14 and averaged over $12 gross on about 500 rats. This year I average about $5.50 on 135 rats that graded better than the average of my other 500 or so. Yes I guess one needs to remember the good and take the average for what it is. Sure do miss Korea in the rat market. If you can buy low grade ranch mink with 2-3 times the square inches or more for what you can pay for 3 rats I guess I would do that too. Plus even if they are lower grade they will be similar and match up real easy and actually lower production costs.
