this time of year I wished I had more beaver around. esp this year- one of the rare years where we have had no spring floods- usually when rivers are open enough, they are too high to trap, and then I just start gopher trapping. The Mississippi and backwaters are still froze up- ice breaker is going to try to go through early next week, but the creeks and smaller rivers are open, and actually low.
castor and spring days just seem to go together.

Set eight bridges with little sign. Had three first check, five second with eight traps. They do look good. In a few weeks I;m going to extreme northern Mn to trap for a week. I'll get more than enough beaver trapping then. Enough work anyway but they are fun to catch

kind of a winterwonderland this morning! We got about 7 inches here- and predicting a good rain tomorrow should really get them moving. Are you trapping the Root?

A little on the root and it's upper branches. The root can be a bear if it rains. Hoping this eight inches of snow go into the ground. Doesn't take long to take the cream just not enough beaver for a real good dispersel.

Had a damage job to do and a different thing happen.Had a beaver on a drowning rod 8 ft.The beaver was in deep water I use a split ring attached to a universal swivel and in 5 yrs. never had a problem. This beaver some how got the split ring off the j hook and got away.Down the creek it tried to go over a small dam.On the bottom side I had a snare it hooked the split ring in the snare wrapped and died.It had to have the things just right to it to happen I even had a guy with me to see it I wish I had a camera to show it what a fluke thing.Medium size beaver had things really kinked up had to be on his last leg in deep water but still got away so it thought!!!

Getting ready to do some spring beaver trapping myself couple of adc jobs wish I could have done it when it was cool weather.I have trouble with snapping turtles plus got to start looking for snakes with water warming. The only beaver I am killing is going to be adc work. The fur market is terrible now

If having problems with bvr coming to castor, just use sac oil at a pull out rest area. Use a toothpick size twig and dip in sac oil and put above and beyond trap. This sac oil is like using urine from a non local yote or fox.... it WILL be INVESTIGATED ! I dont use body grips in a shy bvr situation, footholds and at time snares.

I admit, for the type of beaver trapping I do, I love using footholds. but it is more work.
I find myself last few years, using more of old boggys 330 castor mound, with good success.
I find sometimes just peeled bait sticks and no lure, works with shy ones as well. the old "stump and tree" set although corny, has taken more than a few of those shy ones.

I usually use just foot traps all back leg because the coon are to thick for front leg and snares. It isn't what I would call spooky all the trees bull dozed up to the bank makes it hard to get to them.I hardly ever take a 330 with me any more unless under ice.I am sure the beaver will give it up but I have better things to do.

Finally all done with the beaver.I went back to a few spots to make sure beaver are all gone. The coon must have the distemper real bad they are laying dead all over the place. And very few tracks.
