just heard Leo was suffering from flu, and was at a rehab center-
Leo Hoeft c/o Ladysmith Care and Rehab 900 College Ave. W. Room 224-2 Ladysmith, Wi., 54848
Have had my booth at the WI convention for many years right next to Leo, and a finer man would be hard to find. I remmeber a few years ago, Leo had a woven picnic basket at his booth- we fell in love with it, and wanted to buy it but it was already sold. Leo told us it was a special favor, and he didn't make many of them becasue they were so labor intensive- We told him if he ever made one for sael, to put our name on it.
2 weeks later UPS showed up, and there was a picnic basket from Leo-
we also have 2 of his pack baskets as well-
I'm sure cards would be appreciated.

Judy and i stopped in to see Leo last Sunday and he is getting around, eating good now. Still needs some rehab. For a 92 year fellow , he is doing great. Talked to him on his experiences with medical system and of course trapping. Told him we saw four otter in river just outside his window and he said ive seen alot of those in my years...lol.

Well, I just wrote a note to Leo.
One of our local trappers, will celebrate his 93rd birthday, tomorrow. Good man, WWII veteran, and very good water trapper! I'm sure he'd like to have a card also.

No, Barth Sites was like most trappers, he kept a low profile. Outside of his area, you'd never know his name.
Longtime member of the NTA, FTA and WVTA. I first got to know Barth while I was a director for the WVTA, he called and asked me for a ride to a trap convention. There for a while, there would be 4 or 5 or 6 of us load up, and hit every convention around. He's just a good guy. Barth has been stuck in that nursing home a few years now, honestly he'll never walk out of the place.
Barth's family is having a "card shower", and was hoping he'd get 93 cards for his birthday. Thanks, I'm sure the cards will brighten his day!

when lori worked at the care center- there were a bunch of them both men and women, that used to trap, or their dad trapped, and wanted a day by day accounting- reliving the trapline through her eyes. got lots of permisisons from those old folks kids as well- but that was only a bonus

I understand. But think about it for yourself, being locked up inside a building, never to step in the mud again. For a man that likes to be outside, fresh air and cold, that would be torture.
IT is nice to get updates from your buddies, while they're trapping or hunting, just to see what's going on.

Well, I got word from Barth's daughter, Susan, he recieved 243 cards for his 93rd birthday. Barth is blind now, not doing very well. Susan read the cards to her Dad. Susan and I are friends on Facebook, I post a lot of pictures for my friends. Just about everything from mink, fox, bobcats to deer and bear and flowers and sunrises. Susan has been describing my pictures to the old trapper. Thanks to you guys that sent him cards, and I hope Mr. Hoeft enjoyed mine!

Leo is hanging on and if im spelling it right he has meleloma?? I believe its a blood disease. Thats all i know right now. I noticed he had a pile of cards by his bedside. The poor fellow thinks that since he gained 40 pounds ( its water weight) he is getting fat ! Leo doesnt eat much to begin with. If anyone that knows Leo he is just skin and bones all his life... tough bugger...lol.. Dont forget the ol trapper , send a ltr once in awhile and describe the outdoor things you are doing as he doesnt get outside.

Melanoma is nasty, still praying for Leo. It could be worse. My father had it. The creams hurt, as does the burning off of the growths, but there are far worse cancers. It probably won't kill him.

That Musher has NOT been my experience from working alongside a couple of men/friends with Melanoma AND while my 1st wife was dying of bresst cancer I had the opprotunity to know two women with Melanoma. ALL FRIGIN DIED from it!!!! They all had growths 3"-5" in diameter. They'd treat the locations until it usually healed and then it'd pop out in another location. Now, let me clarify, my dad worked in Thailand and Hong Kong for 10-12 years and had a different ftype of Melanoma on his face and head and the growths mever got larger than an inch in diameter before burn-off. He'd have to go and have those canerous lesions burned off every year. My Dad died last Nov but he didn't die from this type of Melanoma, his heart just stopped while he slept. Apparently there are different types of Melanoma, some kill, some don't. If this fella has the type with the large growths(4 out of 4 I knew personally) he's a dead man walking! It is what it is!

I'm not trying to minimize or be cavalier. All cancers suck.
I went to a funeral about a month ago of a man in his 40's who I wrote about before. Tough son of a gun that actually crawled to his sets trying to catch up to his buds who were checking them. He died of cancer after an 11 year battle. It started with skin cancer and then spread to other types. He worked until the last month. He wore a diaper.
My father had his stuff burnt out pretty well monthly. He never complained, but he wasn't that type. He, too, just died because his body shut down in a few hours.
I wish Mr. Leo luck and serenity.

From what I understand, Melanoma is an especially virulent form of skin cancer, which if untreated or not caught in time can spread throughout a body quickly. However not ALL skin cancers are melanomas. Most are very slow growing and can be easily burned out or cut off without worry about spreading. My Mother had several spots burned off on her shins over a period of several years.

Leo is home now if you have his home address, send a card. Dont know his exact prognosis but im sure if its his time to go to the trapline in the sky that he would rather do it at the home he was born in and live all his life right among his traplines.
