sadly, its gloomy future for fur this season.
Cumberlands in Owatonna is I believe buying rats for $1.50 average, they don't want them. $4 green coon average. Wiebkes says they most likely will stop buying at the first of the new year, they have nothing moving out- rats $3-4 and coon in the $4-6 average $12 top range for green. A couple of smaller local buyers have quit buying.
that's the thing that's driving prices down, the bigger buyers can't move it- plus they have fur from last year. so how much speculation do they want is the question.
the auctions will be interesting indeed.
but- all and all I didn't do too bad.
in the 10 days water trapping, have only taken 1 mink, and saw no sign in the snow- but a very nice December male- $10 rats- had a nice collection of put up rats, all since 12-5, very few kits and no damaged and he gave me $5 average and was glad to take it- but that was last weeks price, and this week its for most rats in the $3-4 range on average. He treated me well here.
coon- sold 80% of my coon at $10, the other 20% at $5 for an $8.93 average.
those 2 blanket beaver- $15 green
wish I had more fox- the 1 I had- $30
coyotes were ok enough-
I had 4 rubbed/flat coyotes @ $10 average 3 blond/red coyotes @ $8 average 1 real scruffy/flat pup @ $5
throw those out, and rest sold for a $28.72 average, with about 30% bringing a $38 average, 40% bringing a $28 average and 30% bringing a $17 average.
for my coyotes, with 3 weeks worth of oct coyotes in the mix, I can't complain

I doubt if Cumberland has paid anyone that average. A less dramatic way to put it is they aren't buying fur. In visiting with Tom Wiebke today I'm not so sure they will be quiting buying. Probably lucky there is not much fur coming in this fall. T-man all your coyotes together this fall what would be a ballpark figure for your total average? I wonder about this season's catch. NAFA trucks have been about empty everywhere and not much action in the country from what I can tell. I guess a short catch would be a start in the right direction for the markets. Guess we have all been here before. Boy those 12 dollar rat averages look great now. After a terrible population last year I have rats and now this.

My buyer said he had to stay at 8.00 avg on good coons, lower on an avg collection 6.50 pr so, as he knows he will be sitting on them and buying on speculation only. he will keep them on storage until he see's a market to turn a profit.
So for my Mo coons compared to Minn coons I was happy. Guys that got 8.00 top on green rats did well then I guess selling early?
Russia already warning of a recession there in 2015 not good for fur.
Don't expect next year to be much better I'm afraid.

that would be pretty close on price for all blackhammer (yotes) sold a batch early nov, and averaged just a shade below that 28 and change so suppose my yearly average would be between 27 and 28

Most country buyers will try to take care of their regular customers as best they can. Including paying above market prices. Keep in mind, many Midwest buyers own a lot of their fur from 2013. Tough market for sure this year.

that's very true Gerald- thats one benefit of using the same local for so many years- Lee and I were trying to figure out how long I've been selling to him, and it was when he was running routes sometime in the early 70s

Wow just finished putting up about 90 rats I caught through the ice since December 5th!!!! Not good, but then there will be all kinds of fur to trap in a year or two if one wants to trap fur. I sold in 1991 with November-December WI coons put up for $4.70, reds at $7.50, mink at $8 for males, $4 for females and good fall rats for $1.35 each so I have experience with those types of results. One has been hearing mixed messages on fur since this summer and now it seems that the toilet has flushed on most fur.

I am taking two dozen rats to a local buyer tomorrow who buys 2-3K of rats and a couple thousand coons per year. He was paying better I heard but has become concerned as of late. I am taking fall rats with about half 2-3x and all but one of the rest are xl. I will ship the rest of my fall rats and all my winter rats. If I don't get about $6-$7 or better I will ship those as well.

I took 22 rats and sold them for $6.50. Two stacks one 11 rats at $8.00 and 11 at $5.00 I did a quick measure and had 8 2-3xl, 11 xl and 3 L rats. All were fall rats caught before November 10th. I don't know if any would have graded winters but I know some were definitely average falls. I have 38 fall rats to ship and will compare how they do at the March auction. I have 97 winter rats that I will put in another account to see how they do. I did not take any coons. I will ship the few I have this year.

a $6,50 average is as good as I've heard- I'd be selling all I had if that price is still there

He is paying one long time customer that traps over 2K of rats or more and probably half of those through the ice $7. in the round for the winter rats. He was paying him $6 for the fall rats in the round. I will ship the rest and compare. Some guys brought 4 really good big coons in the grease and got $48 for them.

Bryce shipping with time and commission might not net one 7.00 avg on the auction this year? Time will tell but 7.00 cash in hand would be tough to ship, north of the border for in this market.

That is a chance I am very willing to take. With 135 rats I don't stand to lose too much when compared with how much the stock market changes in a day or two these days. This could be a year where shipping would not pay out but it would be the first in the last 8 years if it does not so I feel my odds are good and with interest rates below 1% or even .15% on money markets the time value of money is almost zero. At even a $1.00 more per rat and waiting say 3 months for my funds, borrowing say $1200 would cost me less than half of the $1.00 if that.
