I killed a couple of squirrels and rabbits on the run, with the old longbow; but never shot anything out of the air. Lost a few arrows trying though...

my dad and his buddy used to go duck hunting with foo-foo arrows, and brought home ducks more times than not- both using recurves

Yep took a few pheasants with a bow and also more than a few squirrels years ago. Meat hunting though give me the scatter gun Doves just never really impressed me, now ruffed grouse their is a worthy target.

dove hunting here is unimpressive, and not much different than you would imagine- we have no flights of doves, just scattered pairs that are as tame as Robins, tried it when it first opened here, and frankly pigeons are better sport, and better eating
but I would think hunting the flights down south, would be great sport, and difficult
TC- you should hunt grouse in northern Mn, in the arrowhead region-
they don't flush and fly like mine here- 90% and more, are picked off sitting in trees- many use a .22 pistol or rifle as their grouse gun. Why this is, do not know, one explanation is they have little human contact, but I don't think they would have any less, or more, than around here. interesting occurrence though

Tman my ruffed grouse was growing up in NE Iowa and they flushed like crazy Usually in heavier cover making shooting a fast deal one shot and a your done type of deal, reaction time was key. very few flushed in what I I would call semi open breaks mostly in the thick stuff was a challenge for sure so the harvest was more special. Plenty of doves in SD open terrain and the such again really not my cup of tea. Find some ditch weed patches and they where easy Pickens they love the seeds from such plants. Lots of guys here in Missouri as well that hunt them down in the river bottoms plenty of doves to be had there as well.

that's how the grouse are here-
I once had, verified by hunting partners- 13 st kills on grouse over a couple of weeks- never ever did that good before, nor since- and not picked shots either.
I didn't believe how they said grouse were in the arrowhead, and only believed it when I saw it with my own eyes.

Yes my dad was a good grouse shooter in fact I have his gun a browning light weight 12 that he used to harvest a good share of ruffed grouse. light and fast pointing is that gun. I managed to shoot a few each year But I used plenty of ammo to do such
