I found a dead deer in early winter in a cedar swamp. Put a camera on it for the last 2 1/2 months. Have had a coyote in the background a couple times but it never got up to the deer. Have had red and gray fox, skunk, opossum, a dog, and two bobcats feed on it. The camera was there for over a month without me going to it, seems like the coyote would have got up its nerve in that time span to eat on it. We have not got very many coyotes or many rabbits or hares either must be a few skinny coyotes right now, it has been more wintery this year compared to what we were getting use to. Jim

I ran a camera on a death pile for several months as well. Coyotes definatly dont go to the pile as often as you think. Just skirting it seems to be enough for them most of the time.

Coyote in our area seem to appreciate the left over parts (rib sections, fore legs, heads, etc) that deer hunters leave behind from time to time but locations used as designated hunt club piles don't seem to get the same attention here as well. Could be it comes off as a little to unatural for them. I knew one group that used a few small feral hogs for bait in order to lure / shoot yotes. They set up their stands a minimum of 100 yards away. They gave up after a couple weeks of babysitting the bait when they recieved no takers. It's funny how they instinctively seem to know when somethings just not right/natural. They go into the safety before hunger mode. However, I believe high population / competition areas of coyote seem to throw that equation right out the window. Never suicidal, but very bold.

Yup, I think its the low numbers, I have shot coyotes out the back door before when I had a pile in sight of the house but there was more coyote then. Jim

Last year I had a similar experience with a dead deer I had come across shed hunting. Went all of January through mid-March untouched. Then within a week it was down to the bone. Decent population here, so I'm not sure why they would avoid it for several months but then devour it in a few days.

In n.e Pa I have been putting bvr in back yard. I have a pair of coyotes a cat and a pair of eagles keeping things cleaned up. I also saw a local camera with a cat, two coyotes and several hawks working a similar site.

I see the same thing here as well- the answer must be they don't need the food, at that time
