There's been a little excitement around the house. I've been logging fire wood and Sunday a small pack of wolves went through were I was cutting.
That put me on high alert. There are a few deer on our property and they are yarded up near where I am cutting. And I am cutting very close to the neighbours house. Saturday I had seen two deer walking down.
I cut Sunday morning with the intention of setting for the wolves after lunch. After lunch my wife went for a walk while I took a break. At one point the dogs went beserk. I thought that someone was coming down the drive way. Later as I was setting, my wife snowmobiled up and told me that she had raised a dozen or so ravens.
I stopped setting and we went for a tour on our snow machines. As we retraced her steps by the house I cut 2 paths in the snow made by wolves. We're talking about almost in the yard. I'm guessing that is why the dogs went nuts. She jumped the wolves and they ran towards the dogs. She doesn't have a clue of jumping anything.
We went to where she saw the ravens but didn't see anything from the machines.
I did another tour with the ski-doo looking for the deer. Where I had seen 2 I now saw one.
So I went to see the neighbour to see if he was aware of anything. He told me that he had seen 4 deer in his yard. He also said that howling wolves woke him up at 3 a.m. Another neighbours sled dogs were answering them. I'm guessing mine were, too, but we slept through it. He said the wolves were right behind his house on our woodlot.
I went and set on the tracks I had found.
Early today I slapped on the snowshoes and went raven hunting. By following their racket I found the kill. It was about 20 feet from my wife's foot trail on the other side of a blow down.
So I set that, too. Not an easy thing to set as I don't want to catch a deer. We'll see what happens but I think they are gone. It's way too close for them to be comfortable.
