In regards to kickbacks, educate me a bit.
As it relates to the location near sets, why do they do them? I've seen them near sets very close, some around ten to fifteen feet away.
Sometimes they are parallel to my sets and others perpendicular to the set; actually kicking dirt on the attractant.
Today, I had a coyote kickback around a coffee can of dirt and debris on a t-bone. The actual kickback was around three feet from the t-bone.
Twenty or so feet away was a 44 pound male in a flat set.
Any thoughts or input much appreciated.

I would expect 1080 to chime in on this one. I would speculate that it is a dominance/aggressive response to a stimulus (your scent/lure). I've had coyotes in traps and there would be kickbacks nearby. Obviously a reaction of one, to his buddy being caught. Maybe an Alpha expressing dominance over a subordinate, trapped animal.

could also be done by the same coyote before being caught- kickbacks at least in dogs, are also done when reacting to stimuli

When they approach a set and circle they will often urinate and kick back to mark the area and let other coyotes know they are there.Sometimes they can be 20-40 feet away from the set or bait pile.I have them on video doing this, walking away from a bait a few yards, they urinate take a step or two and kick back on it. Putting in flat sets that mimic this near bait piles or flashy dirt holes with lots of bait will pick up a lot of animals that circle sets...
