Rats for me this fall...and a few coon, mink and beaver if I have time.
Not touching coyotes. Well maybe a few, but can't justify trapping coyotes no matter how much I like trapping them.

Nope, all by hand the old fashion way! Everything we bake or cook is from scratch! We've been married just about 22 years and there has NEVER been a piece of store-bought bread, roll, pastry, or pre-prepared food including hamburger/hotdog buns(I do them) in our house? I use bread pans but the wife bakes her bread "artisian" on a stone. We probably bake somewhere around 15-20 different bread recipes.

steven, heard a couple of experts speak on gardens- they said unless potatoes are showing, it is a waste of time to automactically hill them. just hill them if you see potatoes. made sense to me
We got stuff in early- had radishes from march 19 to about a week ago, over last week we have had some beans, kolarobi and beets- carrots just on verge of being ready, but still tasty!
the commercial sweet corns fields have a lot tasselling already-
our flower gardens (we have over 150 distinct varietys) are in late July bloom- going to be an interesting summer and fall. Spring was warmest on record, and may was 2nd wettest may on record
after the dry spell, had 11 inches of rain spread out over last week- missed some of the 1st crop hay, but already are on farms that have cut 2nd crop- in mid June! just started setting up again friday
Tinkering on the bikes and are putting on some miles..trapping has been too all consuming for too long, so we are planning on riding regularly this summer. already got on more miles than past 2 years combined
went to Wi dist 5 convention sat- a real nice turnout, to me as big as I've seen it (its a small district and a small gathering, but a good group of people) and I've done as good there as I have at some 2 day state conventions- people were in a buying mood- and what they wanted to talk, and wanted to buy was.....coyotes and coyote gear
contrary to what the internet implies, I find in talking to trappers at conventions that a VERY large % of them trap for less than a month, and usually a couple of weeks. And that while they care about "fur prices" thats not on their top 10 list for how and why they trap.
They got jobs- trapping is their hobby and as most in their hobby, they want to get the maximum enjoyment out of it, and that more and more is seeming to have many turning to coyotes.
and it doesn't pay for most people but thats not the goal.
but it can pay.
say you take 4-5 coyotes a day, plus coon, fox, badgers here and there- and even keep the skunks/possums if you want and you got a pretty good day. you could even run a rat creek here and there for expense money
I got a lot of days that pay me less than coyotes-
Cause, trapping coyotes is just plain FUN to the max. No other trapping I do..... rats, mink, otter, beaver, coon..... gives me the highs and lows of a coyote line- when all I trapped was rats mink or coon, I too trapped a few weeks a year- coyotes are why I went full time trapping.
Why? I can teach anyone here 99% of what they would need to know, to be a very efficent trapper on coon, et al in a couple of days.
coyotes? 25+ years into them...... thinking coyotes and looking at "coyote stuff" and reading books and talking to people....I'm still learning.
just had a call from one of my farmers.......hes got coyotes walking covered bales (they make toenail marks in the top and sides) so told him not today, but tomorrow will come out.
now I just need my summer lures...............

summer lures and spring bred female lures some of them DO make a differance! Why not give them what they are searching for at those periods of the year?
Pup trapping No big deal but I have found some lures do work better at certain times of the year on adults, some in fact get better reactions in the spring and summer than late fall and winter.
Changing up proven lures to ME never a bad thing........................................
Seldom do you work or are you retired? Making bread to me is very time consuming the best I have time for is Rhodes frozen bread dough at this time in my life LOL.
I have had plenty of radishes, beats growing good, kholarobies doing well but not ready yet, carrots, peas and already have sweet corn down this way.
Field corn is 6-7 ft tall and ears galore all been tassled for awhile now, harvest will begin late August and all combining done by Oct 1st for corn and beans.

On the hilling it could be steve. But i got to do it when I have time.
As far as the coyotes go I hear ya there too.
But.....Sometimes I think that when the time is right a person should pour it on and make moeny when its right.
I've said it more than once, this year was a once or twice in a lifetime opportunity outside of the boom.
The weather was perfect and prices were right if a person didnt sell or sell much before the first of the year.
If a guy had the time to trap full bore from opening of water until the close of beaver season, 40 grand gross should have been doable and 50 would have been realm of possibilites. I'm talking in MN here.
If I lived in either dakotas I think 60 plus could have been done.
A man would have had to work his ass off but doable none the less.

I need to start working on traps, but am having too much fun catching trout. My son and I caught about 60 Saturday morning. He schooled me that day.

steven, you are right concerning what I maybe should have done
and if I could go back 2 years knowing what I know now about prices, I might well HAVE done it different.
But, and this might seem silly to some, it never crossed my mind to do so. I wanted to give coyotes my all, and wanted to do it while I still could, and the last 2 years have been consumed by coyotes.
We have expanded our lines so much, and plan on another major expansion this fall, that when not working, it was working on some aspect of the line.
I had a good rat year, but what I should have done was expanded my winter rat lines, but by the time I realized the other shoe wasn't going to drop on winter, it was over.
I am going to make an effort on otter this year- I tend to trap them only when offered, but with a combined limit of 8 for us I need to make the effort.
-----------------------------
TC, in all seriousness, I have no doubt that some lures are better in summer, than they are other times of the year.
I've had limited experience with late spring, summer coyotes, maybe a total 0f 40-45 over the years, but to be honest, I've never had any problem catching specific coyotes with my "regular" lures.
if I trapped more in summer, I'd no doubt come up with "summer lures" and "fall lures"
so I'll use those, I have some lure/bait a guy sent me I've been wanting to try, and of course will use a gopher.

Went through the rat stools today. Sorted out the ones that need fixing. Will have 380 ready to go by fall. Then with at least 80 160s set up and ready to go and the 60 colony traps we should be able to put up some decent numbers.

What, you got some young kid lined up to go with you to set all that stuff?
You got my number in case you dont bring enough traps this time dont you?
Steve, thats why I keep all my stuff ready to go for whatever. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Only small regret I have on last year is I could have easily caught another 50 beaver in early december when I was trapping rats.
I didnt need the extra work though.

Found out today that the ditch rats and mink are safe from me this year. My partial knee replacement lasted 8 years so climbing ditch banks is way out of the picture! If I can make it until the 1st of March when my other trapping is done, I'll have the total replacement then.
My wife is scheduled to have one of her knees replaced in early September as well but she should be healed by the start of my trapping 11/1.

Planning on slough trapping this year. Might be a bit quicker with the boat and motor. Will still run a road line with some stools and colony traps.
Came up with a new system for adjusting the stools. Last year I used zip ties but the longer they were In the water the softer they became and the stools sunk.
I also believe that by placing a 160 horizontal to the water just like a stool you will catch a bunch of rats. Got that system pretty much perfected. Then with a twist of the wrist you can turn the attachment a 1/2 turn and you have your 160 vertical for a baited set.
Got a lot to do before I leave for Alaska.

Gary, cute. These were wild browns in NW WI. You don't find stocked fisheries at those densities. I had not fished that farm in 25 years - fun.

One regret last season was not trapping coon in Jan and Feb. Had my best year number wise on coon and rats. But I think without hurting my rat catch I still could have easily banged out another hundred coon or more.Well not easily but by using a little more time on the winter trapline. and not driving by too many coon rat trapping. Another 1500,1800 dollars would have more than payed for my gas, rat trapping.Of course one esteemed member of this forum would have said forget the coon and trap rats. :)Maybe he's right ;D But that isn't always practical.

I've aalways said that a guy should trap what he's got paul.
But you are right I'd have forgot about the coon and found more rats haha.
Rats are just too easy to finish and I'm going to finish everything. Just the way it is.
It helps that I'm equipped pretty good for a late winter line and it doesnt bother me to travel.
I've found a couple more spots this summer I'd like to check out this winter. Couple three more and I should be golden.
Who knows maybe I'll partner up with the beav in carolina this winter. I could use a skinner.
