2 minute beaver

Ive heard all the stories of catching beaver right after putting in a set but ive never seen it. Dont have many beaver around but today was my day.

Set up my normal beaver line today and then went to a new spot ive never been on before the landowner said it was getting out of hand. So i show up and its bone dry in fact this creek doesnt normally hold water. so i call the guy up and he tells me i need to walk in a 1/4 mile.

im thinking a bachelor beaver in a mud hole and grab two 330's. So i start walking in and i couldnt beleive it these beaver have 5 foot high dams to keep what little water goes in there and it looks like a logging operation is in full swing.

The water is down quite a bit and maybe three foot deep at its deepest. so i see what appears to be a beaver bank den and all of the sudden a beaver flies out of it. so i put a 330 in that den hole and walk about 20 yards and see another den hole and a beaver flies out of that.

so i walk back to the truck and grab a bunch of traps. go set the second den hole and then find a third. as im setting the third den hole i hear a smack and massive water turbulence. I already scored a beaver and he was a brute 70 pounds. I put in a castor mound and then im getting ready to set some submerged 330's in the runs when another 70 pound beaver gets out of the water near my castor mound set making some crazy noise and appears mad and i nab him too.

so a first for me walk in set up and walk out with two huge beavers. I saw a third if it wasn't getting late i would have stayed until i caught him too.

Beavers are amazing when it comes to retaining water. I once trapped a colony that had made a terrace of four dams in an aspen grove on the side of a mountain. The water coming out of the spring was not much wider than the width of my boot (I wear a size 9). I took 7 out of that colony.
I also have had a rapid catch, the trap was set about 5 minutes, but it was a different location and years later.

You walked out with 140 pounds of beaver on your back?!

I was once setting a hut. buddy was at entrance 1 and I at #2. The hut was near a road and a car was coming so buddy told me to scoot over onto his side so the car wouldn't see me (trap thief was a problem. As I ran over the hut the 330 in his hands went off and started shaking real bad. A beaver had gotten caught as he held the trap.

There as i mentioned in hockey fans.... luck bvr came out into trap as trapper held 330.... bvr could have waited till trapper was gone....lol..... never have caught a bvr while setting traps while at site. Interesting scenarios.

twice I've caught beaver within a minute of setting the trap. Once was setting a den in a house, and then walking back over the house, "kicked " one out into the 330. The other was setting a bank den in a stream, crossed the creek to set another, and heard the first one go off and a big roll of water.

oddest thing I saw- a flat oak forest, and they had a dam maybe 3 feet high, stretching forever in a straight line across the woods, going on for at least a block, flooding a huge area in a state park.

No Musher, i walked out and unloaded my four wheeler off the truck. there was now way i could have carried both of them at the same time.

A couple of years ago I set a 330 at a bank den in a farm pond. As I stepped to the side to climb up the bank a 55 pounder came out and hit the trap. He stood up on his hind legs, lifted the trap off the stakes and fell over backward in three feet of water and expired in about a minute. I've had several several other beaver get caught within minutes while I was still setting up different areas.

I have had enough beaver swim between my legs that is only a matter of time before I catch one while still in the process of setting the trap.

one time had a mink set lori had made, where it was wired to a stake flush to bottom, and I came and checked it, and she had a beaver- on maybe 5 feet of chain/wire.

muddy water, waist deep- I had no idea where she had the trap staked- and it was a tense few monents- hitting a beaver in deep water is a circus, thats for sure- but you only have to get lucky once I got bumped a few times, and kept thinking- don't let him wrap around my leg- cause that couldn't be good..............

I've had a few muskrats bang into my legs, and I always jump like a little girl!

well, when A fish hits me, which happens often enough, I also jump.......................

I was a little nervous setting those den holes cause i was waiting for another one to plow out. The Hulk couldnt have held on to that 330 when that beaver hit it. He hit the end of that 8 foot cable like a coyote hits the end of a chain.

Tapping a beaver with the axe is a sure way to get a little damp!

I figure a wire wrapped around your leg would be extremely dangerous. You'd probably get bit and drowned.
