I have several traps set in an area where the only access is a small lane. I have to walk in about 1/2 mile to the trap site and even walk by some traps to check a few others. The coyotes are using the trail also. I try to stay at least 30 feet away from the traps themselves so my question is - Is that too close to the traps. I have no other choice so I guess that answers part of my question. But today it was raining a little when I walked in. Does rain hold the scent in the area or help wash it away? By law I have to check my traps every day.

rain can do both- a light rain moves scent around, a heavy rain "sinks" it. wet areas will hold scent longer than dry for sure- and freeze temps, will freeze the scent as well, releasing it in thaws-
butt don't worry about it- they know you aren't there "now". walking by sets 30 feet away, shouldn't hurt a thing

As mentioned, don't worry about it. You have to get close enough to see what's going on. It may be necessary to reset the trap, reposition it, recover it, rebait, etc., if you are too far away to see, the set could be there for several days and need attention and you wouldn't know about it.

Why not lead them right up to the set since they are following your trail?

Have mix results on this as some I can drive by and slow down to look at the set (farm lane ) but when it's wet or thawed have to walk the same lanes Driving seems not to have any effect on them as geuss vechicles are part of the landscape/daily norm Some coyotes walk rite down the same path and follow my steps as to see what I was doing and others hit my tracks and turn a 90* to their path and leave but it's in a ratio of 1/4 , so don't know if these have been shot at in previous hunting season or an old dog that has no trust in anything new in the area

around here if a person is after coyotes, the scent issue is a non-issue! i do everything in my power to try to keep the coyotes out of my sets! no gloves, pee near sets, use very large backing and use guide sticks! still catching coyotes instead of bobcats! just buy some of marty's bait and you will be in coyote heaven!!!!!
