I only catch mink incidentally. I made a set specifically for mink once, caught one the next day and decided to quit while I was at 100 percent. Anyway, I'm writing a magazine article about handling wet, muddy pelts and am asking advice from minkers on how they handle a wet mink.

I trap all my mink in water- and any mud & slit gets washed away. Then give it a few snaps. if snow roll and rub in snow then shake. snow is good- you have to try it to see how quick it wicks off water from a rat, mink. DO NOT try this on longhairs, trust me in saying it doesn't work at all.
I then wrap them in a section of newspaper, and stack in tote. If I'm by myself, i just stack them on passenger floorboard.
If i'm going to skin that night, I'll take a towel and give them a last rubdown- after the paper, unless caught right next to home they are pretty dry. I usually skin next day, so then I take out of paper and lay on fresh newspaper overnight (unheated back porch keeps them cool, but above freezing)- by morning dry enough.

I've dried lots of wet muskrats in snow. Works great! I just wasn't sure if it would work on mink. Thanks Stef, I'll include beaver in that, as well.

I do very similar to Steve using snow if I've got it and newspaper. Once I unwrap the mink I towel them than hang in front of a fan to finish. I want my mink and rats fluffy before I skin.

Wet rats in the spring... I put the unskinned real wet ones in my tumbler full of dry hardwood sawdust. Start skinning the dry ones and by the time they are done, the wet ones are dry.

wild mink dry very quickly compared to some other species. Wash them well if muddy and put them near air and temps above 50 degrees. The other ideas of snow, etc. do really work well too.

Nothing like pulling a mink out of a pool on creek and roll in dry snow , then shake and snap and presto a dry fluffy mink with full bottle brush tail.......
