Got just a skiff of snow here the last 2 days. The tracks tell it all, ALOT of foot trafic at the set but just missed the pan on the 3 sets I have out on this farm. Usually set the trap 12-15in back offset to the right slightly.
Dog didnt commit to 2 of the dirt holes, one is new one is a remake. He did get closer on the remake. I would say 90% of the tracks were 3-4 feet back.
Just goes to show waht Ive suspected all along that alot goes on sometimes that ya just cant see.
Been thinking about running another trap on a slider about 3ft back from the hole. Cant do drags on this farm due to vehical traffic.
Just wanting to hear some stratagies and comments from guys that run this way.

I was running along with a big ego towards the end of my line, and I got a bit of snow- ouch
there could be so many reasons why they stood back and wouldn't work the set- but bottom line they weren't either interested enough, or comportable enough. so it could be you had nothing in the hole he wanted, or something about your set made him uneasy.
When I find the answer, I'll pass it on...............
one comment- to me, 12-15 inches back, is way too far back for typical sets. My pan is 6-8" back from the hole. And on more vertical holes tighter yet. The further back you are, the more chances to miss.
on the two traps- some do it- I hear more about a trap behind the hole on a drag than 2 in front, but what happens when he gets caught first in the original trap- you know he will be in 2nd as well- thus limiting swivel action of trap.
Unless a special coyote or somesuch, I can't see any andvantage of 2 traps at a set, and several disavantages.

If you have a digger, hiding a very well blended second trap in front of the original can produce the smart alec.
Other than that, would rather have the second trap at a second set nearby. This is a very good use of that extra trap. Doubles. or a miss and you get him at the second set, non target in one and target catch in the other. Ten good reasons for a second trap at a second set nearby.
Today had a cat pull out of an MB550. My fault, got in a hurry and put some non sifted dirt over the trap and a little clod kept the trap open just enough for a pull out. The large tom went 30 ft and hit the pan of the second set.
Just got done putting him up. Beautiful colored tom. Thank goodness for the second set. Actually have three there.

No, both or 3 traps are on the same single grapple hook.

But Steve, they sometime end up their route on a single stake even if I took all the precaution...LoL
