Got two large ones in boxes with rat traps today close to home. But I think for the first time in my life, I'm not sure if they are long tail weasels or Hermine- regular weasels. Because they could be super jumbo hermine / weasels or small long tail weasels.
What is the "scale" measurements of Hermine and also long tail weasel?
I will add a picture later if needed before skinning them.

What is the "scale" measurements of Hermine and also long tail weasel?
Shorttail: Head and Body length Males-6-9 inches Females-5-7.5 inches
Longtail: Head and Body length Males-9-10.5 inches Females-8-9 inches
From your photo it could be a large male Shorttail or a Longtail of either sex. Was it a male or female? I can't tell from the pic. Are the majority of your weasels Shorttails?
These measurements are from A Field Guide To The Mammals by Burt & Grossenheider.

On stretcher = a large. Take a look... I've caught some as large as small mink. I'll try to find a picture or two. I think this one is a very big male weasel "Hermine" (both of them today were large males)Usually, long tail weasel has a longer tail. I might be wrong... I was saying all this because yes I did catch big long tail weasels (accidental catch) in marten-fisher and raccoon boxes before but I never make this accomplishment in a weasel box with a rat trap as "the trap"...LoL Stef

Well, I found one pic in my photobucket and I think long tail weasels have longer tail like I said in the above post. Both weasels today were very big short tail weasel "hermine" Here's a pic of a nice short tail compared to a long tail weasel...NOTICE the lenght of the tail on the long tail.

Stef, I should have included the tail measurements. They are:
Shorttail: male-2.25-4 inches female-2-3 inches
Longtail: male-4-6 inches female-3-5 inches
That indicates that your specimen is a Shorttail (Mustela erminea).

Okay on the longtail, my mistake. As Stef said you can get males the size of female mink...
