Just got a couple bottles of Pro Coon. I read somewhere that trappers mix this with other products (or do they?) and some use it alone. How much do you use at a set? I understand it is very strong so a drop or two might be enough, but I would like some direction so I don't use the whole bottle up and screw up the set. Thanks.

when I mix it, its 4oz to a little less than a gal fish oil for "normal" winter temps- 5 oz to a gal for real cold.
using alone, start with what you consider "a lot" meaning pouring some on, or a little, meaning a few drops- starting at a "medium" only means you have to go 2 directions to find what works for you. I mix it and squirt with fish oil, because I want a maximum surface area of the lure to be exposed to air.
visual coon sets, use a lot of lure is my advice. I will not use a winter coon lure, that I cannot smell it at and around the set

Hey Steve, I still have a batch of Pro Coon and fish oil I mixed up a few years ago, it still smells pretty strong to me. Any idea how long this stuff would be good for?, maybe spike it with an extra once?

Go down to the drug store and buy some boxes of Tampax and soak them over night In your choice of lure. Then hang them around and near to your sets. Now you have a visual and a scent dispersing object at the set. You might even try some of those drip bags deer hunters use at their mock scrapes. That Is If your to shy to buy the Tampax LOL I'm sure the pro coon would drip from It. Gusto would be my first choice. It's very powerful and Is natural.

I'd skike it if it was me- but set up a location a while back with 4 pipes and found I had forgotten the lure- next check- 3 coon and the only lure was what was in them when I pulled last year.

Well I just opened the package the PROCOON came in, along with two other baits. My wife kicked me out of the house. I had heard that this stuff is potent but I could not believe it is this potent. Wow, what an odor of mint. Sure going to have to wear latex gloves handling this stuff. It has to last a long time because without even opening the bottle the odor went thru my kitchen like wildfire. Think I will take it easy on the application of this considering how loud it is. Probably going to mix it with fish oil and try that first. Will try a tiny bit of the paste on a marshmellow for a change up. Thanks for the replies on my request. Gotta stay in the garage when I open all my trapping lures. The wife is going to kill me. lol

Your nephew is right ColoradoCat. My great grandmother's house smelled just like that. Oh, and great molasses cookies.

The first year I used ProCoon, I didn't mix it- I used a weed in the liquid ProCoon, and did very well.
Why do I mix now?
2 reasons-
#1- far easier to open up a squirt bottle and squirt some into the set, than to have to open up a lure bottle, get a weed stem, dip in bottle, bend down to set to insert the weed stem. My preference. Runnng good numbers of sets like I used to do, the time savings is enormous, plus the PIA factor is eliminated. I run less sets now (coyotes get the bulk of my land trapping efforts), but stil lfind squirting them ix to be my prefered method of lure distribution
#2- in any weather, the more surface area of the lure, the more the air hits it, and the more it "gets out there". In cold weather, thats of even more importance when you are trying to DRAW coon. and by mixing, I can take a large amount of cheap fish oil and use it as a medium to get that larger surface area.
I also, in cold weather use the mixture as a "trailing scent" by giving a squirt up the bank (it seems to matter not if the coon encounters the lure first- having it "hidden" in a pocket or pipe, still gets their attention)
fish oil on its own btw, is a poor coon lure- it has about zero reaching capibilities IMHO.

old school fish oil was something else- and could be used as a stand alone lure
the processed stuff you buy today, is so mild, to not have really any fishy smell to it.

i have a half of a gallon about 7 years old..so by going by mixing it just to get more surface area you could just mix it with vegatable oil and get the same effect.

it might- oil would be heavier, dont know if it would matter. try it
its just my thoughts, on why what works for me, works for me.
