doesn't matter to me on coyotes- price is the same wire or wood- and wire is faster in all ways for me on coyotes. but each to their own.
as far as cheap wire on small sizes- again each to their own
my dad always had a few he opened the bottom on, and those work very well on kits and small rats. and I guess if small sizes was a concern, I'd use more newhouses since they are open on the bottom

That's probably true on coyotes In your situation Steve since your tied Into ONE country buyer.
Using wood on critters Is just like taking a average looking women and dressing her up a bit and putting some make up on her. She Is still the same women but just a little more appealing. Picture this plain ordinary gal sitting In a group of made up dressed up gals at the local bar. Who Is going to get the most attention?
This same thing happens when that grader Is going through 100s of skins. That little extra will always get another look.

there is no difference in the final pelt- none
until you looked at how it was fastened, you can't pick one as being wire or wood.
not stated to start an arguement, just stated as a fact we can obseve from 1/3 being on wood, 2/3 on wire.

I bet I could pick out wood versus wire blind folded.

not in any way that matters in grading coyotes- wood doesn't add fur, and it makes it or the pelt no thicker. coyotes put up on wood, look and feel the same as on wire. Or at least my finished product. If you disagree, you do. Doesn't change my opinion on them. But having said that, I like wood and as I said, put up maybe a third on wood, and do more on wood every year- much of that is with wet pelts and steel, you get some rust that needs to be cleaned off, wood not so. But the appearance and feel of the finshed drummed pelt, is negligible and has no bearing on grade.
fox now, you can see the difference wire vs wood...probably due to the thinner leather and quick dry times- we put all out fox up on wood, simply because we CAN see a difference in finished product.

I went back to wire on coyotes. There is no difference in the price I've been paid at NAFA from a coyote on wire, or a coyote on wood. So if they aren't going to make me more on wood, then I'll get them up quicker on wire.

Picture this plain ordinary gal sitting In a group of made up dressed up gals at the local bar. Who Is going to get the most attention? I know women that would beat you with a stick for writing that! Now I know zip about wood and wire coyotes BUT I have seen a woman or two. Why is it that too much make up makes them look like a very *friendly* person? Not that that's a bad thing. BTW: the naked woman gets the most attention. Why does certain wire work better on small rats?

flexable- you don't get that "tepee" shape on kits as you would on stiffer wire.

Why does certain wire work better on small rats?
You can stretch them longer.
And if you aint got enough stretchers?
Well they are cheap....and work good on small rats.
I aint never used wire for coyotes so cant comment. Doubt that anybody can put one up faster on wire than I can on wood. It would be in the seconds faster.
I use a stapler, no pins here.
And dont turn my yotes anymore.

It's all about How you PRESENT that fur. You would never try and sell a car without washing and waxing It to make It look more presentable.
You can take a scum bag and give him a bath and a shave and a hair cut and put a suit on him and march him Ito court and make him more presentable to the jury. But he Is still a scum bag.
It's the same with fur and In most cases wood will do a better job.
But do what ever trips your trigger.

Looks like rats prices have topped out around the $10.00 mark. That's the top not a average. I think we will have to wait and see what happens on this Jan sale. NAFA has set some price levels but aren't telling what they are.
I'm thinking we will see $9.00 averages through the later auction sales.

You could find a lot of rats if you wanted to pay $8 averages before the shipment for the Febuary Auction comes up.

steven- Really interested what you mean by not turning your coyotes anymore?? Are you tanning them or using the borax method ??

borax
Dont turn fisher, fox, or cats anymore either.
It takes a while for the yotes to dry.
Not a big deal as I dont get many.
