I have built these things for years according to western grey fox specifications but I wouldn't be able to tell you if they were stretched fur in or out. I would assume they were fur out but am not sure. I caught one this year and with the fur out, and am wondering what is used to keep the skin from sticking to the stretcher. I assume it gets put up similar to the coyote. Is wax paper used on the stretcher or is borax used to retard sticking? HP

Put borax in large cardboard box and put borax in, put pelt furside in inside box. Shake box some and then take pelt out and turn fur side out and put on stretcher. If you use solid boards, you can use belly board. I use split stretchers and solid and pelts dry just fine and come off boards well. I experimented 15 yrs ago with yotes and havent changed back to the dry and turning method.

Red fox, Thanks much. Thats the way I used to do it. My brain has taken a vacation with all the booze I drank in the past. Right now it is basking in some borax that I rubed in and just let set. I will put it on a split stretcher tomorrow. I did have a number of split grey fox stretchers from the past sale that I didn't sell and I needed that to bring back some memories. thanks again. HP

HP,
I have used your stretchers for the past few years for greys and cats and really like them. You have the shape just perfect for the tight necks and long faces of the greys. Also soft quality wood which takes a push pin well.
I have used them both fur in and out. For fur out with borax your stretchers almost never stick. But just in case I took your hinge off at the nose and hold them together at that end with a thick rubber band. If the pelt sticks than I just take the stretcher apart at the bottom and pull the halfs out of the pelt one at time.
I rubber band all stretchers these day cause I do them all fur out. It takes a little longer to dry on the stretcher this way but it is worth it. Saves time of course. But also for cats you can really get them square on the stretcher and have them looking good cause you are looking at the finished product when you pin them in place.
One other thing, I borax the heck out of the fur side as well as the skin side just before boarding. Then shake them out and put them up. Brush them on the stretcher and let dry upside down. Boy do they look good when done. Especially grey fox.
Once you get the borax thing down I don't think you will go back.

Hotanddry, I did it up just like that and I couldn't believe the grey fox was that big. It has been a while since I last caught one, but it sure looked a lot smaller in the body gripper that caught I it in. It looks great on the board. I rubbed it down first and then put it in a plastic bag with the borax and then shook it up good. I almost looks too pretty to sell. HP

I was told years ago that fur buyers wanted them fur in and now they say fur out.I have shipped to NAFA both ways and some good numbers at that over the years and I honestly cant say I saw any difference at all in the price
