Experienced DP traps users... How do you hold these traps on frozen ground? What's your secret?

Last year I pounded a rebar stake into the ground, extracted that, then slid a pvc pipe into the same hole. Dogproof's base rod slid into that. Have considered grinding "wings" off the end of the rod to utilize smaller pvc pipe.
Trying something a little different the last two weeks. Last time I went to the hardware store for tubing for the dogproof's triggers, I cut 'em up as usual, then tossed 'em into a jar and added ProCoon. Soaked 'em for a day.
Now I push a regular sized marshmallow under the trigger, slip on the tube, then a regular sized marshmallow wedged in the top. That white marshmallow really shows up in the dark.
The ProCoon "aroma" wafts away from the trap, yet the 'coon can't get at it until the top marshmallow is eaten.
All my dogproofs are hooked up to drowners and the tubes are usually missing when I retrieve a catch.
Works for me.

I use the ztrap now with the better staking system. But before that I used only the Duke .I would take a chisel and make a hole on the ground and then grass wad the hole maybe a stick or 2 to help wedge it in and set it with my bait.I had maybe a honest 1 or 2 pulled and left but most all pulled out and had coon.I used this system till end of January and great results. Had well over 200 coon that way.I carry a extra trap because some traps froze onto the coon foot and now I just open the j hook and put on a new trap. My 2cents.

If I am near woody cover a 3/4" hole drilled in a tree root or fallen log works great with the Duke stabilizer.
I am surprised this trick has not been talked about much yet. Well, now it is free game for some of the internet "experts" on trapperman to spread it as thier idea.

I make a separate stabilizer. 1/2" angle Iron stakes about 10" long. Cut some 1 1/2 Pvc segments about 2" long. Now split the Pvc segments on one side. Then you need to remove about 1 " of that PVC. What you end up with Is a piece of PVC that will snap over the side of your DP. Of coarse this doesn't work if your using daggers or Alcatraz type DPs.
Now you can bolt or pop rivet the segment of Pvc to your angle iron stake. Leave about 1" of stake above the PVC so you can drive the stake. This Is a great break away system and can be used In many different situations.

The Dagger has a built in feature just for this. I'll let someone more "Experienced" tell how it works. Had a coon remove the dog from one the daggers, stuff happens.

Zip ties work great. Use a drift pin to make a hole jam In a stick and zip tie the trap to It.

Carlis I gave one of those daggers to a buddy to try. He called today and said he set It Tuesday and checked It Wednesday and he hadn't caught anything. He said If the trap had been any good It should have caught something. The dagger Is a well built trap.

lots of ideas here better than what I do-
and thats just to pound in a rebar and use those cheap bread bag ties (2) to tie the trap to the rebar- works well, and entanglement has never been a probelm on the rebar

I guess someone forgot the post he made ( which I have a copy of) about the 2 doz Daggers he used last year and how much he liked them. But I think that must have been before they decided to copy.

I did like the Dagger till the ground froze. The trap would not come out of the ground nor go into the ground. It was a good fair weather trapping tool or keep going South in un frozen ground.I had to start using different traps for year round use.I don't like taking several thing to a set to make it work when one can do it all.Been catching 40- 50 coon a day with the Ztrap. www.kegcreekbaits-lures.com

One plus for the Duke over the Grizz is the anchor is much easier to use when it freezes. In steady temps a guy can just have a pilot hole so to speak that you just stick the anchor back in.

Seen on another post where people was having a lot of bait stolen out of the Z . Thats the same problem I was having with my grizes with that mod, even the guy that used them for 2 years couldnt tell much difference. Thats a big part of the reason why the dagger dont have that trigger setup. And also didnt want to copy Garys round tube.

Never had a bait problem.I never set mine in tall grass that is for 220's.I have some bait stolen but not a problem just move the trap a little.I used all traps and the bait was taken out of all the traps no matter what kind it is.But bait being taken by mice is a very small problem.
