I find those extra cuts he makes after popping the front legs are unnecessary to get at the ears. I keep the winch going 'till the hide is about halfway down the skull, then cut straight across and up at an angle on both sides to cut through the ear bases. The tension helps to make this easy. Trim the eyes out and pull to the nose and cut off.
Otherwise, a good video for sure.
I just haven't graduated to the electric winch yet. Still using the boat winch/block and tackle skinner.

I break the necks on some of my coon as a dispatch method, and don't want to pull the head off with too much tension. Every coon is different. Thanks for watching.

I might snare a couple this winter though.

Thanks guys, The big "light bulb" for me was using the steel, or smooth rod to strip the hind legs. On young coon it is no big deal, but on those tough, old, sinewy boars it is really an equalizer.

Thanks Scott, I "shuck" my mink legs like that, with a big fixed nail on the bench, but will have to set something up to be able to pull the back legs on coon like that.

I'm curious to know if a fixed rod would work. Mine has to be portable because this space serves double duty.

Scott, a fixed rod works.
Greg Schroeder uses, like a 5/8 bolt thats 5 6 inches long that is attached to his table. Has the end of the bolt grinded down to a semi point.

I find it easier for me to run the rod through like shown then grab rod by both ends and drop the coon. Let the carcass to the work. sure saves on the body. Very quick and easy. Just the way I do it. Nice video, thanks. I also think a hook blade and a head knife would be nice for you to try.

I've tried a hook blade after watching ADC's video, but I guess I'm just not ready for that yet. What kind of head knife are you using renny1? I don't use the same knife for opening as I do for the head work. They are the same model knife, just two of them.

Head knives have serrated blades and take a lot of bone before becoming dull. all of mine are very old and wore down bad so just grabbed a steak knife from the house. very poor quality for sure, but does the same job, just have to run over a steel more often. Just goes to show-different strokes- because I love the hook blade. Been a while since I've seen ADC's video, gonna go back and look at it again. He pulls the blade across in front of his body. I much prefer to stretch my left arm holding the far leg and pull towards me in one long straight stroke-top of foot to top of foot- just like in your video. Anyway like the video.
