the urine thread is touching on coyote behavior, and I thought I'd share two observations that told me many things, probably some of what i don't even know yet......
(PS-- not a thread for those that think all coyote discussion is nonsense)
#1-
About 15 years ago, was checking a creek daily for coon. time was mid December, about 18" of snow on the ground.
the creek ran 90 degrees to the road, which was just outside the city in the country, but a few house across the road.
the creek had a brush/scrub treeline maybe 20 feet wide on both sides.
parallel to the road, up to the creek, was a small ditch again with a brush/scrub treeline about 25-30 feet wide.
bordering the treeline along the creek, was a picked, not plowed corn field.
everyday, I'd walk the same trail in the snow, now beaten down into a good path. every day, I'd see fresh coyote tracks in my trail.
everyday, I'd think- man, if we could snare- and the trail passed right next to a big tree- so thought I'd get him there (if i could) and placed a penciled stick maybe 3 feet tall, on the opposite side of the trail from that tree- where I'd hang the snare and guide, if I could.
the next day, there was a trail around that stick- so the coyotes left my (our) trial about 3 feet from stick, went around it, and rejoined the trial about 3 feet further down.
the rest of that season, they ALWAYS went around.
#3- was gopher trapping 2 years ago, at the bottom of a hill hay field. Just got done, and was standing by the truck, and a coyote came out on the ridge line, maybe 250-300 yards away, and came walking across at the skyline. I watched it come, normal walking mode, not looking around, intent on going somewhere- and when it got directly opposite me, i dropped my trowel into the truck bed.
IMMEDIATELY, with ZERO hesitation or looks or ear pickup or anything- it was GONE.
poof

moral of the stories among many: coyotes aren't geniuses, but they are cautious.
comments welcome
