During my career at Dow I had the chance to meet a chemist that worked in the lab where they "designed & built" lotions and salves for hands and body. He told me that in order for any hand-type salve/lotion to work to it's full potential that your hands need to be damp(not dripping wet) in order for the salve/lotion to facilitate the adsorption of the mosture into the skin.
I grew up using what we called "wool-fat"(bag balm) when it was only sold by Rawley house-to-house in the red & yellow cans. It worked for many years healing and softening on just about any skin-type injury but I've learned that there's something far better for healing my cracked hands regardless of what I choose to use for the moisturizing.
My hands would get so bad after a month of skinning that I could be writing this and feel the backs and insides of my fingers splitting open as if by a razor blade and bleed! I went to my doctor and he explained how I needed to heal the skin whenever my cracking got out of hand by using the same prescription surgery nurses use from wearing the same type of gloves. Now, whenever I slip up and don't use my hand moisturizer as I should, I apply a thin layer of "Betamethasone Valerate Cream 0.1%" and rub it in on the crack/split then use my lotion/salve over top. BEST THING I've ever used to heal my hands!
I've also gone to using "accelerator free" nitrile gloves skinning rather than the regulars and I'm seeing less cracking since switching.
