I was reading a previous post about using a firemans axe (Pulaski) and was curious, as I currently use a cutter mattock.. What am I missing with using a cutter mattock versus a Pulaski. The mattock is built quite a bit stronger and the digging blade is a wider which is the portion I use the most. I can see the axe being better at cutting roots, but not as good at busting frost up as the other head on the mattock. I am not saying one is better than the other, just wondering if I am missing the boat.

I'm switching from a cutter mattock to a Pulaski this year for roots like you mentioned. The digger on the Pulaski I have (Nupla) is the same width as my mattock.

The blade on the ax makes it easy to chop out the trap bed when the ground is frozen ,and of course it helps with the roots

in my setting areas, a simple pick axe works well enough- I just wanted to try the wider digging blade on a fire axe.

I fasion the one blade on mine to a point. Helps me for pulling sets. I get the point into the dbl stake ring, or cable loop, etc.
I have no experience with the newer tools. I have two that are likely a hundred years old, or at least fifty. good old metal, and worn in, as in, well trained haha.
I seen these and old stock handles on ebay. I bought an adze handle from the one guy. Awesome peice of hickory.
