Is rapidly approaching.
I'm 99% done with what I have to get done, so am still on "schedule"
Every year it seems, one modifies something on their lines.
this year, my main "new" things are going to be I'm going to put out more weasel boxes, and I'm going to try for the first time some colony traps.
I picked up a doz weasel boxes, and armed with the Porters video, I'm going to give them a real try, nice having that 3 day check, cause I don't think its going to be a moneymaker for me, just something new to try.
got a few colony traps, and rk is going to send me a package of what I should try here, so looking forward to that as well- I've got streams that freeze up more than I like, and the colony traps should do well there working 24/7.
last year put up 150 or so rats on wood, and was thinking of going that way based on what I read all the time on the internet, but when my buyer asked me "why the wood, don't you have enough wire?" and said he prefers them on wire, that was good enough for me. Each to their own on this- I honestly feel like pleated tails on mink, the end price is the same.
I backed off of dry land coon a bit last year, and while not going full out for them, will put out a few more.
I'd be far smarter to just trap the coon, and put in a coyote set once in a while, but we live for those 5 weeks of coyote trapping.
it seems seldom a day goes by, where we aren't if not doing something related to coyotes, thinking about them............
As far as my coyote lines, not going to change too much this year and in fact am going to set up more pure travel locations, simply because I'm going by them, and its something I have a knack for.
last year had my best year, and feel that by continuing that outlook, but adding those "hope and poke" locations, those numbers will get even better.
was happy with my skinning system, so nothing will change there. I will however transport more skun coyotes than I did on down the road rather than having them buildup at singular locations.
I've had a few guys ask why I don't use a bigger hammer, and my reply is still I HAVE one, in the truck, but in 99% of my soils, the extra weight isn't worth the extra work. Different strokes on that I guess.
did however buy a fire axe this year- Zags has been promoting its use for years and 1080 as well. I do have and use a pick axe, but can see the wider blade would shorten the effort in some locations.
been dicking back and forth on the screen between what I have been using (I get from Graham), and heavier screen (as got from O'G).
Trouble is, I find disadvantages and advantages in each and would actually prefer one in between- but in any case since i have a ton of the lighter screens ready to go, I'll go with them. and I'll decide once and for all this year- do I stay with them, or go to the O'G type screen?
Still happy with peat- got 7 bales dried and ready to go. Still happy with dry dirt- got more than I need tucked away.
What I still got left to do: tires on truck, final paperwork on line setup, a couple of small yard projects and load and pack truck- and 2 weeks from today, I'll be skinning coyotes!
so..... how are things shaping up for you?
