They are great Mink traps. Put them on drowner rods or slide wires and leave them the way they are. The only thing I might do would be to put some #2 music wire springs on them.

I was almost thinking of putting on 1.5 springs for a lighter pan set off.

Also was adding a swivel and about 3' of dbl loop chain since I picked up a spool really good price and adding old truck rotors which I get for free as the weight in case of a coon catch.

add a couple of lag bolts to your rotors- one or 2 coming in from each side- make them long- 8-10"-
you will be amazed at how they then dig in bottoms, rather than slide.

Right on Steve, learned that long time ago and also with RR plates..... wasted alot of trapping time looking for critters that skidded the weight along.

Good idea on the lag bolts, thanks !!!!! How do you think a loose drag like this would hold up with an otter catch ? I do have some otter a 2 places I plan on setting near bridges.

not well at all I'm afraid unless deep dropoff type water- so increase the weight substantially, or stake the bottom WELL. I had an otter 2 years ago, pull up a beaver drag weight (that beaver barely moved) and get into the next set- and he was caught in both traps- and had the chains of those traps so knotted together, I had to get the bolt cutters to cut them apart.
I like otters, but glad we don;t have thme everywhere- it would sure change my staking methods if I could expect more otters.
kind of like growing up- coon were such a non factor in late 50s, early 60s, that one could stake mink/rat traps without a concern for a coon catch- today, every trap has to be made "coon proof"...
so far, I can get by with normal staking in most creeks w/otter.
