outdated?
I keep forgetting so many are addicted to the trap of the month club-
if something works well, its going to continue to work well- after all, the coyote is still a coyote
the purpose of any stake..........is to "STAKE"
menaing hold down, unmovable, etc
if a method works efficeintly, then its neither outdated nor fresh- its just doing its job.
the one size fits all, sure seems to be the grail.....................

Steam shovel's still work well...do we use them?
Its a far easier tool the disposable stake...faster, more effective and lighter. For the beginner, re-bar stakes are fine so long as they're used right. But even a kid could pound in a 12" disposable stake and hold a coyote...
I just like working with easier stuff...and to me, the disposable/cable stake is a no brainer...

there is room for both and both do a job in the intended areas which fits there use over others.
One I don't trust welded thing that get pounded on and beat into the ground, specially a small nut with a small bead of weld, so iowa disposables are not an option for ME, I know millions sold and used but the last thing I want is hair crack weld turning into something below ground.
In hard ground concrete hard the best "I" have found is the old stand by rebar stake you can get by with 24" stakes and they will hold an elephant in these soil types. Earth anchors are a chore and much harder to deal with in soils of this nature.
IN anything but rock hard dry or frozen then cable stakes are very fast, easy to apply and hold well. I'm back in farm ground and will be using plenty of pogos which I have made up and also 3 dozen wold fangs in lighter soils longer cable config, but I will still hav rebar, drags and cable hook ups packed along for harder more rockier gorund in the hills areas. With the under brush and vegitation and trapping on public areas drags will be used alot.
I think as stated one size sure doesn't fit all and having a varity for any given situation fits best for me. A 2 track trail in a wooded public area isn';t getting any stake down they will be on drags for sure, I can cut theft and preserve the location without anyone knowing about it.

There is not one that will work every where in all conditions, period!! What I have found that works in MOST conditions, other than rocky or frozen ground is the Iowa Disposable. If its frozen or rocky or hard clay I just use a drag. Sure its some added weight but you cant get any faster.

if I trapped greasewood and sage, I'd never stake a set- they go 10-20' and there they are. I wish I had the cajones to go to more drags here, but I just get nervous with all the bare ground inbetween. I use them now in quarrys, etc-
and there is nothing like picking up a line on all drags, thats for sure.
had 2 locations this year, where the ground was so loose, that you could not get a cable to hold. and believe me I tried- only recourse (for the situation) was rebar which did the job just fine.
I use mostly cables, but i don't think they are, in many soils, all that much quicker to get in than 2 rebar- and they certainly aren't more efficeint than crossstaking- but they ARE lighter
and easier to pull

Ever cross stake disposables? Try It
Nothing faster when picking up a line Is that subtle snip of the cable cutters. And NO storage problems.

Still not sold on the earth anchors 100%. Seems they have their place but other places (rocky) rebar takes less time and monkeying around with. So, I have half my coyote traps setup for rebar and half with the superstakes on chain. Soil conditions dictate what bin I grab from.
Personally, I had issues with the pogos...bending or J hooks opening...or spending time cleaning out the crack in the driver. Gone.

The same as cross staking two re bars. I always carry extra cables on quick links for this reason. If i am not 100% sure on the holding ower of the first cable, i will run a secod down and quick link it on for the extra insurance.

The IDS give me ulcers! I cant figure out how to use without having driver/stake sticking problems. Drives me nuts! I am using stingrays with my daggers this yr.

i been getting mine from mtp the super stakes with the chain.i love them in my rocky ground i used the berkshires for a long time but you can only use them a couple times and with the super stakes i dont have to drive a pilot hole and with the chain if you cant get the last couple inches in the ground you dont have the cable sticking up.they hold good in sandy ground too.

Yep still crossing rebar here for the most part. Too many times while pulling cable restraints with cable stakes they pulled out way to easily for a leghold even with a shockspring. No doubt the soil condition was the issue. Hard to find a spot the rebar won't anchor properly.

I'm still using rebar. Only use the disposables when I trap out of my area in different soil types to lighten the load. When I trapped very rocky areas, I got by cross-staking two 12 inch rebar stakes. Never had a problem.

I have been using cable stakes for several years in all types soil and have had only one to break. I use them over year after year. just change cable as needed. Other than a drag on occasions I will continue to use cabels at all land sets.
