There's NV, which prohibits NR's from taking cats and gray fox. And MT doesn't allow NR's to take what they designate as furbearers, which is pretty much everything but coyotes, skunks, weasels, red fox, coons and badgers. No cats, rats, beaver, otter, wolverine, marten, beaver, etc. An interesting question for the future for MN and MT is wolves, and what the NR regs will be on trapping them when that method of take is allowed. Probably an individual limit of one with a $376 tag required.

FWS if I could trap a wolf for 376 I would be around Victor, ID this fall!!!!! A wolf, a hyena, jackal and a lynx are tops on my to do trapping list. The hyena/jackal may never get done due to cost!!!!

Beav a big step to what?
Bob, hyenas are much larger than any coyote for sure. A coyote and a hyena fighting NO match what so ever the hyena hands down in a heart beat. Just would like to catch one is all, but cost will probably never allow me to do so, unless I win the lottery.

Probably a lot of guys would pony up to trap one wolf. Wonder what kinda iron will be allowed, I'm thinking the agencies in the Lower 48 might frown on 114 Newhouse's for land sets. Unless you want to do captures for a research project, which is doable. A friend earned her doctorate on hyenas and is working on African hunting dogs currently. Lot of research projects on the small carnivores in Africa and Asia. Black-backed jackals are smaller than coyotes, maybe 20 lbs. Spotted hyenas from 100 to 150 lbs. I was just looking at full body mounts of each a couple weeks ago, hyenas are impressive. They're a status pet for the criminal element in some African countries, You're on the wrong street if you walk into a crowd with guys leading hyenas and baboons on chains.

FWIW, It wont help the spring rat trappers but unless I'm mistaken a MN trapper could still trap this fall in SD. The new NR law wont take effect untill July 1, so a MN trapper who buys his license before then could still come over and trap this fall. 2011 SD trapping licenses are valid untill Jan 31 2012. Anyone currently trapping rats had to buy a new license Feb 1st. That license will still be valid this fall.

Does the set back date still hold where non-residents can not start before early December?

Well, the SD Trappers Assn voted today to recommend the the SD Game, Fish and Parks to have only a 1 week setback. It beat out no late start time by one vote. The current 1 month late start only received 2 votes. Only other concern is if your State is reciprocal.
Interestly, as of March 30th, 2011 SD has sold 62 NR Furharvester licenses with 33 of them going to MN alone. Next highest number state was WI with like 12 or 16 and Iowa with 8.

I guess I would have guessed a tad bit higher licenses sold for the state. I think I saw that many MN trucks where I was. Some probably goose hunters that I mistook for rat trappers.
Yes Steven, your rat taken numbers probably more accurate than mine.
Chris M. I was told the same thing as far as how long I could trap: Until the expiration date on the license (Jan 31). The start date for us MN guys may be different, however.

I went to Ft Pierre to get my lic. and the lady there said there had been "about" 100 lic. sold at that time. Where I was there had been 5 shoot permits issued to the township, and everybody must of had one. Everybody was shooting them and I skun several that I found that had been shot. The road damage is real bad too. Like Calvin mentioned, most guys are road trapping and the vast majority of the slews never get touched. I had four landowners offer me permission on their land, and one offered land in N.D. There were 7 other trappers from Wi. and about that many locals hitting them where I was. A real study in float design. Rats went from $4.50 to $3.00 in ten days, with shot rats at half that, and three buyers had all they wanted. Coots showed up about the middle of last week, ducks all over, and the pheasant are fighting already. Good time, but a good idea to take a skinner or some way to put them up or give them away.

Talk about truth being stranger than fiction. Those leashed hyenas weirded me out far more than any Hollywood movie has in years. And to stumble across them on a muskrat trapping thread is almost surreal. But TC39 you can have your canines, I just want one crack at a leopard with an Alaskan #9.
