Yep, trigger needs to be on the bottom paul.
Early i use pretty much 100 percent rebar or h stands in a deep run.
When it thaws I have started to use more of the short h stands or else I just use sticks.
Alot of times i am too lazy to carry much with me other than a trap and a shear. Drive the sticks in where I need them and shear them off to the proper height so when the traps goes off it and the beaver are off the support.
If the beaver cant get off a solid support in the spring right away fur damage will occur.

I get those long stabalizers for deep runs and you wire them shut and pop in the runs and I can wire off to something if need be, they work well and are a fast stabilizer. Many times don't even need waders in some of our areas to set runs with these type of stablizers.

I set almost all conibers trigger on bottum . the kbs work fine you just put them on off center with the trigger centered. the corner of the trap might set on the ground but the trap is still stable enough it's going to be hard to tip over if you are coming at it at trap height .
