How are the "low cost" callers generally?
There are extensive areas "here" that you can't trap, but I can access it by boat . I figure I can call and shoot (shotgun) from the boat when and if the critters come to the shoreline. This is mostly for coon but there are some fox. This would be done at night. I can anchor up close to the shore, call and move a 1/4 mile and do it again, there are miles of this shoreline.
I really don't want to invest a lot of money for this experiment.
Any ideas, or suggestions welcomed.

You get what you pay for in an E caller. If you want coons then the minaska line starts at 400.00 has the best coon vocals on the market. There video crumbling coons is good for beginners to calling.

Make one, it's not rocket science. You need an MP3 player, an outdoor speaker, an amplifier and a handful of other parts.
You can even make it remote controlled.
Sounds are all over the internet that you can download and then edit on free sound programs like Goldwave.
You could build one for under $50, I buy Rio 600 MP3 units on Ebay for $10-15. Speakers are about $10-12, amplifier $10 and the rest can be salvaged from junk. ;D

Hmmm, FWS, I shoulda figured you'd know the cheapest way to do it, lol.
I'll get my boy, the rocket scientist, well, really the engineer, and computer geek, to "volunteer" for this project.

The inexpensive e-callers I have seen $30 or so would have plenty of volume for what you are doing. Problem is you would be depressing the button over and over as they are not set up to run continuous. I don't know nothin about calling coons but if legal I would suggest slow trolling the shore while the sound is playing continuously and with the light above their eyes cruse in for the shot. Keep the sound on all the time so that out ahead of you they are coming to the shore and are waiting when you get there. I know it works for fox, cats and coyote so it prolly will work for coon. Should be a cassette tape available for coon calling and you prolly already own a portable player. Called and killed quite a few varmint with my 20 year old Johny Stewart jackrabbit tape and this year spent 700 of my fur check on a foxpro. I hope my wife don't find out.
