No damage to coon, coyote, or cats. I use the 22 Mag for calling in and shooting our tiny, light framed grey fox. Zero damage. I use Hollow Points. I've killed cats at 100 yards with very good consistancy. I do not like this round for coyotes over 30 yards, however. Calling coons at night with the 22 Mag is a joy. No damage either. Great little round as long as you keep your shots within its limits.
You finally getting rid of that wired together high and to the right 22? ;D

I like the 40 grain winchester hollow point. Usually no exit hole on cats, when in a trap and can choose the shot placement. Center of the chest straight on. I prefer the .22 long rifle solids. On coons do not use the Remington 33 grain Hornady V-max tip bullets. Anything I have shot with the 33 grain has had major damage.
My .02.

22 Mag- I love it!! I have a Marlin BA w/ a 12x40 scope wrenched on.. It's such a versatile round. 100 yards-- not much problem.. Grey/ Red fox, coon, beaver, carp, skates, crows, stray dogs (compairable to a coyote as far as I'm concerned), deer, cows, sheep, goats, geese, turkeys, ducks.. Even put down a quarter horse w/ my 22mag. Had to, broke leg.. Sad really..But, better it than me.. It's name was Simba Sarral Saurous.. Boarded it for a Chicky-poo at our farm.. That thing had a cock on it 20" long.. Freak of nature.. I have a picture of it somewhere.. I don't think there's anything east of the Mississippi that ya can't knock w/ a 22 mag.. Hollow points.. Small creatures, anywhere in the vitals. Big creatures, head shoot only, straight on or from the side.. Damage on the thin-skin fox is nothing more than a 22cal hole.. It doesn't blow them up like the 300 ultra mag does.. And it don't kick like the ultra either..

ok, so consensous is to use the hollow points to shoot cats and coyotes I jump while trapping ( free- not in a trap ) that are dumb enough stop and look at me for a few seconds at say 30-40 yards or closer? forget the jacketed non hollow points as not enough blow up inside the varmint? steve, I`m keeping my klunker hi and righter to hammer stakes, pull re-rods, club porkys and use in bar fights. I bought the new .22 mag as you shamed me so mercilesly. it`s your fault.

Bob, I use the Federal 30 grain jacketed hollow points (sierra bullet) on coons with the best success of no exit wounds and the least fur damage.

Been shooting some winchester super X hi fragment hollow points. Havent seen any anywhere this year , but they are pretty sweet.Stretched the mag a bit today on a dare. Nothing like holding 9 feet over and 1 foot right and hearing crack, shhhhh , thuummp , with 2 witnesses. Pure BS luck , but almost split a gut laughing over it. LOL The CCI maxi mags are a bit hard and do alot of pass thrus on fox. have never shot a cat with them , but had to use them in a pinch a few ears back for coyote dispatches for the season , and they were fine then.

9 feet hi and a foot to the right, just like my old .22lr for head shots of animals in a trap ,while standing next to the varmint a step away. I have STEVE CRAIG as a witness!

ya, it`s a theft proof gun for sure. a bunch of giant muggers could steal it from me, wrestle it away and threaten to shoot me with it and I`d just start laughing as they shot each other while aiming at me. only gun I ever saw that you could shoot around corners if you had a mirror.

Bob, Did you lean this gun against the truck and forget about it and drive over it with the truck or just have to use it as a crowbar a couple of times pulling trap stakes?
I've taken some of my guns swimming several times but they all still shoot pretty straight.
BTW, how are you going to able to hit anything with a straight shooting gun?
Better get a couple of extra boxes of shells and do some target shooting before you head west!

The winchester jacketed hollowpoints are by far the best. Alot of the other brands have a plated bullet but the actual jacket on the winchesters win in terms of kill power and accuracy. I hit a dumb wilderness fox at 20 feet once and got a dime size exit. Range is about 100 long yards on all of the above but a good .223 will triple that. Why not step out of the stone age and get a .223 or similar?

My Marlin 22 mag. likes the CCI holowpoint real well. But for critters in the trap I'm going to one of those 1000 fps pellet guns. I've used one of a friend's it worked great ,.........and no noise if that's ia issue to you.

I`ve got a $1,000 dollar stainless 223 with a pricey scope and case for long shots but it is so bulky and inconvenient to uncase and shoot I never use it. it hasn`t left the house for years now or even been shot for longer yet. what I need is a quick grab hang out and shoot at cats and coyotes I jump while running traps. just a cheap klunker gun that will have the barrel rusted and dirty and dusty and the wood all scratched to heck, but right there to be grabbed on a moments notice. I had the around corners .22 l.r.and killed more than you would ever dream with it but also have hit 2 cats solid that I never found and it has eaten at me ever since to where I got a gun with more oompa.

Bob, I got the very gun you need right here. Marlin 22 Mag, open sights, ready to take on a good coat of rust just like you want and right in your price range. $100 bucks! Picked it up at a sale and it shoots straight. You want me to bring it to Kansas?

already got one, but bring it anyway. I`ll probably lose the good one the first day anyway by leaving it on the bumper as I drive off. a guy never loses a cheap gun, just the pricey ones. wish I`d known you had the 100 bucker earlier.

I use winchester 40 grain jacked hollow point in the silver super X box and have killed just about everything with them. Work great on coon alway's exit small holes . good on Coyotes and cats to about 100 yards but they always run . Unless of course head or spine. I have a Marlin 25mn bought at Wmart for about 150 bucks and have had it for about 5 or 6 years and like it real well. Used the gun to stop a 31 pound bobcat that pulled a earth anchor after 2 day's or rain. Real glad I had it instead of the usual pistol.
