A buddy is wanting to buy an automatic shotgun......MUST HANDLE 3 1/2" shells.............any opinions on either:
Remington 11-87 Mossberg 935
Either reliable?? I've never owned an auto, n don't plan on it IMHO.

Given the 2 options,I would go with the Mossberg;mainly because Remington hasnt made a decent shotgun in about 20 yrs;at least nothing that compares to the sturdy and reliable 870's of the past. The beginning of the "express" line was the end of the quality control for Remington scatterguns.
IF,however,I was willing to spend the jing, the Benelli SBE is an incredible firearm. If I was the type to treat a shotgun proper,or at least put it in a case,I'd have the Benelli.

11-87 is a great gun i think i got the cheaper model it was like $800 full camo beautiful gun works wonders the only thing i dont like is how far the ejected shell goes but thats just because i m used to pump guns i've had the gun thru rain ,dust ,80 degree days and 30 degree days the only thing my gun hasn't seen is snow but ill break her into that this year, and the gun hardly has any recoil at all a 3.5" shell kicks like a 3 inche shell in any 870 and its quite as anything

I would agree with Edge. I pinched pennies til I could afford one. I have had mine seven years with no problems. It has never jammed. I don't clean it religiously either but when I do it is easy to break down. When the spring goose season was in its infancy I put a case and a half through mine in two weeks time and about that many in the fall for ducks. Changed jobs and priorities since then but still have it and wouldn't trade it for anything else. Theywill take the abuse and are a good investment. Just my .02

I'm a pump man but have heard good things about the Benelli. We have extreme conditions here on the coast especially during the Feb. sea duck season.

11-87 I have 2 my first is the original made in 87. I have had little problems with them. I have the SP and the gun works great, have killed turkeys, deer, coyotes and many other critters with it. the 26" barrell is nice for multiple species hunting.
I'm not a fan of the benelli, have had jamming problems and then we did a barrell replacement on the one I was issued and they changed the barrel support and the shotgun needed a little smithing to get it to fit proper.

I'm no help.
I have used a Benelli, liked it a lot, and I own a 11-87 SP. I further regret trading an old 11-47, but have to live with the decision. Anyway, I think they are both good.
However, I mostly use an 835 Mossberg....for everything, including dove. It has to be a Ford/Chevy issue, to some degree?
In a duck blind, I have no problem with an auto, but in and out of a vehicle, all day, hunting coyotes, that auto is a pain in the butt negative as well as a safety issue.
Good luck with your choice, LB

I too am looking at an auto the old 870 super mag is tearing me up. I found one made by Remington its in the line of the spartan brand they carry. They call it a Remington SPR 453 it is a 3.5" 12 gauge and suggested retail is just under $500. I read on the web about them and for the most part they have good reviews. The only bad reviews were opinionated as far as I could tell. Like you'll never beat a B brand gun. might want to check it out.

You couldn't go wrong with a Winchester Super X 2 either, made in Belgium by FN. I've tried a few of em' and for a down and dity hunting shotgun they're damn nice. See some good deals out there too, like this one on Gunbroker. www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=61627827

No, I believe it's 5 in the standard mag tube when you remove the plug. And there's an extension tube that'll make it 8.

For the money the Beretta Extremas are hard to beat. Have had 3 or so and love them except the fit. They run from light dove loads through to the big boys 3.5s. Take a bit of breaking in for the light loads. Think the recomended was firing several rounds of the magnum loads through with an intermittent light load, til she cycles right. Sold my last one and still have yet to replace it. If only that dang stock was not so thick feeling. Still looking for the ultimate good fitting cross shooter.

I hear ya on that stock fit with the Beretta, get the next one from www.seminolegun.comBut it is my humble opinion the Benelli takes the cake for your needs. These guns can be dropped in water and still fire. Yes the beretta is a softer shooting tube but if your only going to pass a few rounds Benelli Super Black Eagle is it. Me I favor the Beretta due to the step rib in the Benelli that gives me a slight blind spot as your moving into a target.

Man,I couldnt find a used SBE *anywhere*.......maybe they got wonky too.
I love read what guys who actually USE guns write;great posts guys.
Freak,my old 835 had a stock like a fencepost, actually still *does*,but a lot of it is missing..Anyway,the NEW(under 300)one has a really slender stock and forearm, and since my head attaches directly to my shoulders,I appreciate narrow buttstocks.
The new mossberg auto is about the same stock thickness as the X2;slick,but the X2 has like a rubber caoting on it....

richc, looks like a nice gun, have you fired one?The pricetag is a bit much for me,at least til the kids have new shotguns(SXS).
FWS,I always thought Fabrique Nationale was an imorter, not a manufacturer...?.........but then,I think a lot of things.

Edge, Nope, haven't fired one yet. I am only going by what I have read so far. The Berreta Extrema has chrome lined bore just like the Benneli semi auto. I ruled out the Benneli because it lacks the gas operated action that helps soak up recoil. The Extrema should have less felt recoil due to the gas operated action. I have been reading all I can find in regard to the new "tungston mixture" fodder. Tungston being so dang hard, it seems to me that if a guy plans to shoot tungston down the bore, then "chrome lined" seems like a good idea to me.
I did a little bit of research on the Winchester SX2 also. I don't think it has a chrome lined barrel, but otherwise it looks like a winner. The receivers for SX-2 shotguns are made by FN, but other parts are made elsewhere. It seems that the gas operation mechanism is nearly identical to Browning "Gold", and the barrel is back bored & threaded for Browning "invector Plus" tubes.
