I have been whacking coyotes for quite some time, and now favor an accurate, scope sighted rifle. My latest purchase is a model 700 Remington CDL in .243 Winchester. I am shooting Winchester "supreme" ammo with combined technologies 55 grain ballistic silver tips. I have a Weaver 3x-9x-40mm "tactical scope mounted on it at this time. I am interested in a scope that would give the sharpest and clearest image possible. Any suggestions? One questionI have is, would a fixed power scope like maybe a Nikon "Monarch" in 6X 40mm tend to offer a more clear image than a variable scope that is set on 6X ?

If money were no object I would put a Schmidt & Bender 1.5–6 x 42 on my .17 Rem. and my .222 Rem. since my shots are 250 yds. and under with most under 100 yds.
But I'd say a fixed 6 x 42 with a custom reticle tailored to the trajectory of your load with ranging capabilities would probably do everything you need to ever do and probably better because you ain't dicking with any power settings.

FWS, Do you have any experience concerning image quality in fixed, versus variable power scopes?

FWS, Do you feel that the Burris Fullfield 2 is a better scope than say a Nikon Buckmaster? How about Nikon "Monarch" versus Burris Signature models?

I have 2 Burris Signature Select 4-16x w/ the Ballisti- plex recticle. I think they are great scopes. Clear from edge to edge and I like the Ballisti- Plex reticle. The BDC is almost right on for the loads I shoot (.22-250 and .270).
For the price and quality Burris is hard to beat. Also, made in USA.
I can PM you more info.

The Zeiss Conquests are very decent scopes, so is the LPS 1.5X6 Leupold. I have two 2.5X8 VariXIII on a couple of calling rifles, I really like them, at half the price of the first two.
Good hunting. LB

I've used a lot of rifle glass, some great, some not so much. The end result is that all my rifes are topped with Nikon Monarch.

Isn't a clear sharpe image determanied by the quality of glass, not the power? I thought 6x was 6x fixed or adjustable.

Yes, that's correct, the magnification doesn't have a whole lot to do with image quality. The type of glass is important, but so is the design and the construction.
Lens coatings, and the amount, on external as well as internal surfaces are of major importance.
I don't know what was written in this thread that caused you to ask the question?
Good hunting. LB

joe, My question was in regard to a fixed power scope versus a variable. I asked this because it seems to me that a variable power scope would need a little something extra inside in order for it to be set at different magnifications. Not being a scope guru, I don't know exactly how a variable power scope works inside. To a common guy like me it seems like a fixed power scope would be easier to build, take less parts and would likely have a sharper, brighter image.

I don't know much about scopes either. LB the reason I asked is because of the last sentence in RichC question was would a fixed power scope like a Nikon 6x tend to offer a more clear image than a variable scope set at 6x. I didn't see the point that he was meaning, about a few len's internally in a fixed scope versus more lenses or differently designed lenses having more of a chance to distort the image your looking at. I see question as it was meant now. Hope I am on the same page.

I have located two new Nikon "monarch" scopes. A new 3x-9x-40mm for 240.00, and a new 6x-42mm fixed power for 215.00. I am thinking that either of these scopes would be close to Burris "Signature" model 3x-10x-42mm quality. The Burris is 340.00 or so, I can't remember exactly. Any thoughts? Edit: Burris 3-10x40 Signature Select Rifle Scope
Matte Plex 1" SWFA: $373.95

Edit: Burris 3-10x40 Signature Select Rifle Scope Matte Plex 1" SWFA: $373.95 I have a Nikon Monarch UCC in 5.5-16.5x44A/O on top of a Rem.700 in .243,I've had the scope on the rifle for 3 and 1/2 years,it has taking some hard raps, falls etc.I still have not had to re-sight it in since I first sighted in when I mounted it on the rifle. My calling partner uses Leopoulds and Burris Sigs on his rifles and pistols,I've looked through them under hunting conditions, and my Nikon to me is brighter and clearer, and alot brighter than the Burris Sigs,he even said so looking through them, but said it looks the same as the lupy's. My scope is mounted with Burris Sig Zee rings and I think there the cats azz for scope rings. It's more scope than I need for around here but the price couldn't be beat, the local sporting goods store had it on clearance for $300.I hunt under the moon alot here and it's like daylight in that scope.I believe the light transmission through it is 95% through life of the scope. The Nikon buckmaster is only 88% I believe. If I can ever afford another rifle,I'll be putting on another Nikon Monarch and would probably be a 3-10 or 4-12. Hope this helps.
