The best advice I can give you is to listen to a recording of the distress call you want to imitate. The better you sound at duplicating that distress call, the higher your percentage of success will be.
Coyotes have been called into campgrounds to the sounds of babies crying. NO, DON'T GO THERE! LOL!
Coyotes have been called into turkey calls.
My point? Anything that sounds like a young animal in distress will call coyotes.
Yes, most calls are either howls or distress calls of some sort.

I'll tell you this. My 7 year old called in a coyote this year making the worst racket you could imagine, with a hand call. I guess the coyote wasn't scared to try something new on the menu.
