Did you ever have one of your caught furbearers startle a passerby? I was talking to a guy today that get "skered" a little when he came upon one of my sets. He said that he was driving and that he saw that the road was torn up a little. ;)He got out of the truck to have a boo. When he peered over the bank, one of my wolves was there. He said that it began growling and lunging at him. Needless to say that he got into his vehicle in a hurry and left the area. He told me that he knew I'd be around soon enough! Gave me a laugh.

Years ago I found evidence of an attempted release of a skunk from one of my traps. 'Attempted' because the skunk was still there, and there was a trail of clothing leading away from the set back to the road. Shirts, pants, underwear, socks, shoes, a stocking cap.......... All absolutely reaking of Natures favorite essence.

One of the better stories was what happened to a friend back in the 80's. Some dude tried to release a coyote as my buddy watched from a hill above and got the license number of the truck with his binos. The guy got mauled by the coyote, but did get it out of the trap. The game warden tracked the guy down, he was in the hospital, stitches and bandages all over. And getting the very painful series of rabies shots. I think it was a number of shots in the abdomen back then. The warden cited him and when he went to court he was fined and forced to pay restitution to the trapper.

that`s a thing of the past. now it`s a waste of time to give the law even a movie of a thief in action. guess they would all get off anyway, claiming eco rage.

I had a bobcat shot in a coyote trap by hunters BEFORE the season was open for bobcats in Wyoming one year. The Game Warden in Saratoga (Biff) refused to write a citation to these guys because "they were putting the bobcat out of it's misery"! When it was pointed out that these guys were trespassing he still refused to issue a citation.

Lame wardens, I'd say.
I had a coyote in a trap shot by a bow hunter. I know him and my wife worked with him. Trap was over a rise on the edge between timber and field. Said it scared the crap out of him and he nocked an arrow and shot it before he realized it was in a trap.

This fall my trapping partner had a skunk scared 1/2 to death by me. I wasnt so scared, just quite unconfortable after the encounter. But there was only a trail of gaunlets and tile spade on the way back to the truck. 3 bottles of water and a few minutes and a few select kind words I could see again. A couple hours later and I was good as new.

Well actually a few years back i did up a mounted skunk that the tail raised with a spring and fish line release. A small sign in the bathroom..."OUT OF ORDER". would make the guest have to go to the house with the' cresent moon'. There would always be a ray of light hit "peppie" on the trail. Damm link (lynx) hauled it away after the second year. Spoiling the party's fun on new guest.

I decided to trap through deer season this year, yay.
Coming out of the dark carrying two coon and a possum a "hunter" asked the old question, will the traps hurt him or his partners, I said no but don't get to close to one of these in a trap. They never went in there that I could tell.
They later asked where other sets were located, I said over there and down in there.
The land owner told them not to mess with my stuff, and they did not. There may be "some" hope. They later shared a fire and hot soup.
That deer season was enough hassel that I had to relearn why I run a real skinny line at that time.

had a trap over a hill, and heard a shot- got over it, and 2 kids standing by a coon in my trap. I was pissed, so slammed to a stop and jumped out- and started chewing out the 2 kids (17-18) when I noticed truck rolling down hill- sprinted back ,got back in, got truck stopped, drove back to kids- they were standing there mouths open. This all happened in like a minute.
after the close call, I went easy on them- they said the old "didn't know it was in a trap" and I think they really might have thought that.
I do get a few yotes each year shot by deer hunters "helping me out" and while I don't like it a bit- at least they aren't shot all up and they don't steal my stuff.

one time found blood all over ,and fox stolen, obviously. actually this identical scenario happened twice, once by deer hunter and another time by a farmers hired hand. walking out I see a muskrat house of leaves and sticks maybe 50 feet off and lo and behold there is the stolen fox buried in the pile of duff. I confront guy in deer stand and he says he was hiding it so no one stole it till I got there. kiss I disagree, he was hiding it till he got ready to leave when he was intending on stealing it permanent. the hired hand used corn stalks and the dumb fluck didn`t know enough to figure I could follow the blood dribble trail. when confronting him ( I had written consent from the farmer), he said , ya, well, he intended on trapping that fox eventually so really it was his anyway. I was younger then and rushed him at that point and the fat &(&^* went squeeling off like a stepped on little pig. another stolen coyote that I recovered out of the deer hunters barn he told me the samerold didn`t know it was in a trap story. I says wellgee, what did you think when you took the trap off his foot? the lieing sob . as it turned out he was a wanna be ytrapper and dumb me I even gave him some free traps and etc when he was 14-15 years old. he was mid 20`s now and likely even knew he was stealing from me, same guy that had shown hum kindness. he came from a very wealthy family of thieves in the greenwood ,indana area. I`ve heard every story in the book about no good lieing pricks stealing my stuff.

For the first time I ever, this year, I recovered a stolen coyote..... 17 year old farm hand, spreading chit up on the hill. He drove by the trapped coyote at first light, then drove by it again at 9AM. This is a big dairy operation and they spread a lot of chit...... The second time, 9AM, he figures this traps been in the ground since Jim Bridger came through, and decides to put the animal down. Happens to be a .410 slug gun in the tractor cab.... Shoots the coyote from the cab, jumps down, takes coyote..... I pull in, see catch circle.....and CSI: Cazenovia goes to work. Tractor tires and only a couple of boot tracks, and no blood trail. Coyote brains on the ground AND an unfired .410 slug. The slug musta fell out of the cab and he did not notice it..... Hired hand! I go down the hill, find one of the other farm hands......and I tell them I was ripped off by one of their own. No way! IRONICALLY, Billy happened to come down the hill with a coyote in the tractor AND he told the other farm hands that he "shot a coyote up on the hill" He forgot to tell them in was in my trap......ooops. I call the owner, and I throw the kid in the grease with the farmer.....No way! He defends the kid, he's a good kid, blah blah blah. I say I just want my stinkin' $18 coyote back. I get a call from the farmer and he says the kid will meet me and give me the coyote....... I meet the kid and he IS nice.....I tell him that I want to be mad at him, but everyone in the valley is vouching for him, so I will let him off the hook. He does not have my coyote in the truck, he says we have to drive to it........... ?? We go to one of the satellite farms, and walk up a hill about 100 yards, and there it is, hidden behind some brush. I had to ask him, what the heck were you going to do with it? Well, one of the other hired guys had been screwing with him, so he was going to come over that night while the guy was milking the late shift (they milk three times/day at this place) and he was going to prop the dead coyote up inside the guys S10 on the passenger seat. He thought the guy'd get in the vehicle at 2AM and crap his pants..... Well, I am all FOR hijinx like that, so now I am even LESS mad at the kid! But, I made him carry the coyote down the hill to the truck! Zagman

I had my share of stolen catches this year. One guy took my catch, peeled his tires over my set so I couldn't figure out that I'd caught something, and hung my trap in a nearby tree (it had blood on the lever and jaws). Duh. Another incident where there was blood on the ground and trap stolen; second nearby set, the trap was stolen, too. Another incident. Bobcat in my trap, shot by a guy, and he left cat in the trap along with a note saying he didn't know it was in a trap. Sorry. People think they have a right to your traps and your catch if they stumble upon them. Problem is, you can't check every set before these yayhoos come along, no matter how early you start your line. Some of these guys are out and about at night, jacklighting, etc.

I found a skinned coon in one my traps back when I was a kid. One of my rival trappers in high school was following me around.
The landowner fixed his arse good about a month later. The landowner, a crazy old woman, snuck up on him while he was messing with one of my traps. She stuck a loaded and cocked pistol in his face, and told to him to start digging his grave. She had him crying and begging for a good long time before she finally let him go...
