Worst I've seen for a long while here in east central ks. 5" rain, then ice storm, then snow. Now freezing and thawing, with 5 more inches of snow yesterday. Had 3 weeks vacation to trap coyote/cat and it was essentially a total loss. Just got started setting a few snares Christmas day. With the freeze/thaw and all the mud underneath the snow, it's difficult to keep land sets operational. With the price of coyotes, I'm not going to fight it much. It will be weeks before it dries here. Probably about July.
Back to work Wednesday, so the weather should get better. Western Ks has to be better than this.

It really is tough sledding. I've been busting my butt since I'm on break from school, but it's a lot of butt busting with not much success. Land traps are hard to keep working in these freeze thaw, snowed in, iced over conditions, so I'm switching to mainly snares. Been picking up a few coyotes here and there, but just haven't seen any cat sign to speak of. Normally at least see a few tracks, but no cat tracks anywhere. I'm not sure what the deal is.
I would switch to beaver trapping, but the ice isn't thick enough to hold my weight, but just thick enough to where it's a real pain to break through for any given distance. So, I'll just keep slogging along and hope for the best. Hope the weather is better out where your headed Steve.

I'm just 3 miles north of the Kansas border and it's the same way up here as what TD described....I start setting my longer line out tommorow, and it is going to be alot of work to pound it in...hopefully I can find a couple timbers that the cats are working in..
With all the rain we recieved then the snow then the ice then another 10" of snow its a crusty muddy damned mess.....my boys and I dug a hole last night to bury my lab, and that was a friggin nightmare....so this line will be quite a learning experience i'm sure.
Good luck everyone.

MY rancher contact in Mid west kansas says its the pits for travel off road and mud routes are a mess. Once it warms and the snow melts it will get worse until colder temps/good winds firms things up. I wasnt planning on taking an ATV out but looks as though I wont have a choice. Just takes up extra space and adds extra weight that I dont need. I will be heading out the first of the week.

that`s normal indiana weather, water level same as soil surface level. any hole dug fills up full by seepage in minutes or less. no bottom to the roads or fields at all. only difference is that is "normal" here. this is why this state will never be a serious trapping state and why losing our `live market here is near the same as making trapping illegal. no rats, red fox, grey fox, otter or cats. and low grade coon and coyotes, lol, between disease outbreaks. then do it in the slop? no thanks. trapping is over in indiana for me, forever , barring little hobby runs on the rare sunny day in early fall to fill the pee cages.

Bob, With the change of situations you may want to seriously look at driving farther south west this year until you find dry dirt.
With out the live market I .know I could never get excited about catching bald coyotes

It is really tough around here right now. Lots of snow and we have had more than our share of drifting and when it does warm up, the mud will be tough to deal with. Normally right now I have out a lot of sets, but I don't have much of anything set. It has been cold enough that the coons are all denned up, skunks aren't moving very well. We had fresh snow two days ago and yesterday when I ran I saw a couple of cat track, I haven't even been seeing any cat tracks. I saw a couple of coyote tracks and I caught one of them. Each time I have seen a coon track for the last week, I caught the coon, heck even the possums aren't moving. I hope the weather gets a lot better.

Bring your wheeler Bob, I think your going to be needing it.
I'm hoping that i'll be able to get my line set up out of my truck tommorow, thats so much easier to do than doing it off a wheeler...but the way it sounds by Tuesday or Wednesday i'll have to take my wheeler to get into my traps.
Good luck when you come out to Kansas Bob, I hope you have a good trip....remember your emergency brake ;-)

I have a few snares out. Supposed to warm up some in a few days. Won't be easy trapping for awhile. Good news is while driving yesterday afternoon I saw 2 bobcats. Didnt get a shot at either one cause pickup was sliding when I put the brakes on. Things ususally stop as soon as they reach cover but I couldnt see them by the time I got stopped. Seen lots of coyote tracks too.

is ks reciprocal? I never thought of that. it`s not steves fault. I know he wants mn open. but to the other trappers in mn stopping it, what preeks. greedy small preeks at that.

I justify it by saying- Its not me, its Gary Meiss and his MTA Marten Mob thats holding things up.. Yes, I know- it disgusts me also. Greed and jealousy.
But hey, Scott is doing a 4 year report on it, for what reason don't know- but jeepers- a report!
you nailed it Bob- and whats really hypocritical- is MEISS has traveled elsewhere to trap- yet, insists on protecting his "own" fur.
