Caught a huge tom today. He swathed about an acre of sagebrush before he finally got a dally where he could immobilize the trap and power out. This lion actually made me fearful because of the size of his track and the steep country I had to trail him in. I was afraid he might jump out and send me tumbling down the hill. Look at what he did to the prong on the drag. I believe that was 1/4 inch steel. My boot is a size 12. Joel

Joel, went with them #2 Bridgers like you told me last year. Holds on to them bobs real good and the lions pop the jaws out fairly fast. No damage to the trap, just put the jaws back in and reset. Damn lions. Now I will probably have to deal with one. How come your boot prints are going the opposite direction of the cat? ;D

followed lion tracks to a group of sets this year....really a heart-pumping experience for this in-experienced cat trapper...
First set, an exposed trap walkthrough, the lion (not a big one) literally stepped over the Steve Wood type blocking, the tracks showing on either side of the trap in the sand.
That was the closest I got.....
The other sets, it walked right by and did not turn into the sets (someone told me not to make a cat turn into a set) and kept on going.....
At the time, I did not want to catch it.....now, I wish I would have.
With a Jake trap and 10 feet of good chain, I bet the lion would have still been there......
Haven't crapped my pants in years....that might have pushed me over the edge.

Zag that lion would have been there in a Jake.
I set small traps in lion country because I don't want to waste time going back with the fish and game.
I used to let them all go but a couple of years ago there was a bill passed making it a potential felony to poach a big game animal. I'm not taking any chances anymore, the f&g can release them.
I wouldn't want to put a wire on one this big anyway.
Using a single trap in a walkthrough will have many lions step right over the whole thing.
"Ladder" your set and things change.
I'm really surprised that he was held by the 3n, foot placement must have been perfect in a uncovered shingle set.
I'm surprised at what he did to the drag, I figured the trap would have busted first.

By the size of those tracks, he is a BIG sucker for sure. He is one I wouldnt want to release for sure. Few realize how powerful they really are. Nice pics though!
