I was out setting conibears for beaver a couple days ago and had a lodge that was difficult to set up my ordinary way, so all I had left was bait set ups that would work. It was my last stop for the day and I had no bait sticks and I couldn't go up on shore (too many summer cabins on the lake) to find any either. Then I remembered my PVC pipes I pulled from the coon line. I slid the rings of a 330 over a dry pole and wired a 1.5 " pipe 1' long to the pole so it would end up between the jaws of the trap. I will be checking this set with my den of Cub Scouts in a few days. I used this same set before using a smaller size pipe wired to the trigger of a 330 and it smacked a xL beaver 3 days later. Anyone else using this type of set?? Here is a little better discription of the set I read about. www.mntrappers.com/beaver.html

I am sure that, underwater it looks just like a peeled stick.

That would be my guess too. Somehow they want it.

Conibear 1, I wrote the article that you mentioned several years ago for our state TA newsletter. Was kinda surprised to see it online still. I do use several of the PVC sets each season, but certainly not exclusively. I have used the PVC on (dead) snare pole sets with success also. For under-ice beaver, I rely mainly on (green) snare poles and setting den entrances with 330's, but I still get a kick out of catching beaver on a piece of plastic. Quite a few folks I see at conventions tell me that they have tried the set and caught beaver - but, of course, I would probably not hear from those that didn't. Have also heard some interesting variations : One fellow cut a notch in the end of the pipe and uses the pipe as his trigger. Another wrapped shiny reflective tape around the pipe, barber pole style, and caught otter and beaver. One told me he paints his pipe green to resemble popple, and scrapes off the paint in spots to appear that it has been chewed upon. Good luck with it - hope you have some catches when Cub Scouts go with you to check ! Regards, Mike

Another use for PVC...! Only a trapper would think of painting the pipe green and scraping off some...I like it! So mike- are you MAKING your snare poles with the pipe or using pipe somehow as bait?

Steve, The PVC was nailed onto a dead wood, vertical snare pole, with the snares hanging right in front of the PVC - similar to peeling the bark off a green pole behind the snares. Mike
