I find over the years I have less "Big Days" and more "Average" days.
Just out of curiosity- I checked my records from this season to see WHAT days were best. On each day I ecord the AVERAGE temp for the day and the major weather feature.
Here are the results:
Coyotes: (Best daily catches)
1) 57, rain 2) partly cloudy, low 40's 3) partly cloudy, low 40's 4) sunny, 60 5) pc, rain, low 40's
Worse Days: 1) sunny, 10 below 2) sunny, 20's, ice 3) sunny , 50's 4) partly cloudy, 40's 5) partly cloudy, 40's
Coon: best catch days
1) Rain. 40's 2) sunny, 20's 3) sunny. 30s 4) cloudy, 40 5) cloudy, 40's
Lots of skunk days on coon- so can't really document that.
about the only think i really think is that on cloudy nights when rain comes late in the night- I seem to do better on coyotes

Steve, My best days are usually on a night during or near a rain event. Rain is a pain but it usually means fox to skin. ;D

While I have no documentation this question is easy to answer, the best days coincided with a warm front, misty rain and fog with a increace of temps about 10 degrees. Great skunk nites also .

Thats a good coon night- for sure!
I think a lot of the puzzle is what occured before the "big night" and what after.
In other words- take the kind of night yota described following a period of very cold, dry, windy, etc weather- and those are the big nights.
I think wind is a very big factor for land animals. My coyote catch drops a lot on windy nights- plus, pullouts happen more on windy, stormy nighhts- the animal is just more aggitated and works the trap harder.

My weather data from this season is incomplete, I was having too much fun trying every lure combination I could ;D But one thing is for sure, a 10 or so degree warm up after a couple of cold nights or a week of cold really brought the fox out. I also noticed that if the warm night coincided with a bright moon it was even better, conversely, a full moon and real cold temps equalled just cold feet for me.

Give me the night before a weather front is coming thru and a dark moon, if I have sets out they'll get hit on these nights.....B..... Lets see does that raise the ? about Coyotes and moon phases?
