Today was the first day of setting. As usual, I'm trying new stuff. As usual, I'm learning things. Here's a list.
A #2 4 coil on a thumb nail stings. It's not the first time I learn that. At least it didn't bleed this time.
Pogos are o.k.. but they are tough to pound into the rocks. I broke 3 pounding them in. The driver (a la Stef) is one heck of a pain to remove when it's stuck. I did a badger hole one time and a fox den another.
A file can fix a messed up pogo driver.
Forgeting a screwdriver to adjust a trap pan is a pain. I also learned that pennies don't fit and that there are no dimes in the truck ash tray.
My back isn't what it used to be.
There's more but my bed beckons.
Anyone else doing any learning?

Things should not be casually left on your ATV or should be tied down, even if you intend to put them right back on. Lost a brand new pair of leather gloves right off the bat. The briars I drove through latter on reinforced this rule, and I didn't have spares.

I left my buck saw at the furthest point on the line. I use it to cut drag poles for snares. I'm hoping I didn't run over it. I also had to go back for my cutters once (1 marten box away) and I forgot the wire once, too. At least it was at the beginning of a loop so there was no back tracking.
Game didn't move much last night. It was raining steady. I'm hoping that they start tonight. At least I wasn't skunked. My knife has been working. I saw a couple of deer and potted a few grouse also.
It sure beats work!

Brand spanking new waders and multiflora rose bush don't mix. Learned this while prospecting ... Didn't even get to the opener with 'em ... ~ sigh ~

More lessons from today: A jake can't hold a moose. I think the hairs in the trap are from thearea under the mouth. It was a grapple system and it was given a good swing! Some flat files don't have grooves on the side. When you're in the bush and you want to touch up a night latch they are useless. I'm not ready for collecting skunk essence a la Bob W.. I don't catch a skunk every year but today I did. I decided that I prefer so sleep with my wife. A double on reds still gives me sore cheeks (from grinning too much.) I caught my first marten on a new lure. Raspberry jello! (Thanks for the idea, Dusty.) I like wax paper as a pan cover. After seeing Bob's video I decided to retry it. Now I don't remember why I stoppedusing it. I think that cold weather might remind me...

When it's cold Plastic caps on lure bottles break easy if you over tighten them. Now I smell like LDC. AKA skunk

#1 do not start the season without 4x4 or 4 wheeler and think you dont need either one of them.. #2 dont stick your hand into a miltifloral rose bush and expect NOT to bleed.. #3 have alot more disposable stake drivers than 2 people could use and you MIGHT have enough.. #4 dont go to one place and expect to trap the same sets as last year because it now has 100 head of cows pastureing in it and they lick your dirt hole and trap clean(still waiting to show up and see a 1200 lbs cow caught by the tongue)

Musher, I lived in Alaska for several years and trapped a lot of martins. The only lure we used for trapping martins while I was there, was maple extract. It worked really well, but the down side was that I would get hungry for pancakes every evening when I skinned the martins.
