In an add for the Ohio River Fur Co. from the September 1983 issue of 'The Trapper' (which was later named 'The Trapper and Predator Caller') Cover headline, "Don Hoyt Wins NTA Presidential Race". And there's an op-ed by one Robert Wendt of Indianapolis, IN on Eastern coyotes and his fear that Western trappers would swarm IN to take all their high $$$ "trophy" coyotes. And I see the 'Berkshire Professional Coyote Drag' looks a lot like the ones J.C. Conners makes now. ;D Filled with ads for lures, supplies, instructions, etc, etc............ All those ads and the characters behind them mostly gone now.

Those old mags- whether for dogs or traps- sure were interesting. People wrote ads that made everything sounds like its was unique and you couldn't live without it.

I think Bob's letter must be shared, ;D
[glow=red,2,300]More On Eastern Yotes
Editor- I recently read Johhny Thorpe's letter on Eastern coyotes or brush wolves. I could'nt agree with Johnny more. When I originally read the letter claimingour Eastern coyotes were just coy-dog, I didn't agree.
My Eastern coyote consistently weighs 40-65 lbs. with some individuals going as high as 80 lbs. The hides of the beasts if taken prime will bring anywhere from $40-$100 in U.S. currency (unless very dark or red cast) on the Canadian market.
Having trapped both East and West my opinion is that the Western coyote is a sorry animal indeed compared to our huge, brawny, heavily furred, beautiful brush wolf. If the truth ever gets out all the Western trappers will start state hopping East to get a chance to trap a real trophy animal. The average 20-30 lb. Western coyote is a poor second place.
Coon or fox hounds will refuse to run the brush wolf and in fact will not hunt at all in areas where the brush wolf lives. The uneducated hound learns quickly as he will pay with his life or at least be whipped severely. The brush wolves lead the hounds on a merry chase until the time is right, when the wolves turn and fight. One brush wolf will lead hounds off and later other members of the wolf pack drop in for the fight.
Besides offering a challenge to the trapper the brush wolves have made strange bed fellows indeed of houndsmen and trapper as the wolves have completely shut down coon chasing with hounds in some areas. I personally have secured trapping rights on areas that in the past were totally forbidden to trappers due to the houndsman fraternity.--- Robert Wendt[/glow]

This letter had much affect, state officials in NV recognized Bob's warning and took action by restricting the take of bobcats and gray fox to NV residents only.

Coyotes are huge around here. The dogs keep running them. I wish they would stop though. I might have better luck catching them! LOL

Well Joel, I remember Bob and I trying to talk James into joining NTA on another forum about 6 years ago. ;D We were right based on past experience but circumstances arose that caused us to modify our positions.

I remember paying $1.11/ gal. for gas back in 1983, the Leupold 3.5-10x I ordered from Midsouth Shooters Supply was $150 and the Rem. 700 ADL in .222 Rem. was $179.00. ;D The .222 is on it's third barrel, the Leupold still sits on top with never a problem in all those years. But gas prices suck.

In flipping through the old trapper rags I also found a pic of Pam at a convention from about 1980, tight jeans and a snug fitting little top.

I remember when the TRAPPING classified section of FFG was more than one full page deep of dealers and such......now, heck, there's only half a column. By the way....regarding that. How in the heck is Paul Grimshaw still peddling his folders as NEW? ?? Truth in advertising, my butt! LOL "Trappers-Two New Folders-Animal Glands and where to find them".............. Wish I had a nickle for everytime I read that line! Grimshaw's a great guy........and I am glad he is still advertising in F F G, no matter what the ad says..... Zagman

by golly, I`m still here and still, well, here. I`m sure much to the disappointment of some drikheads. interestingly the houndsmen of the day used to run red fox, now they have brawn-ied and souped up there hounds to run coyotes ( eastern coyotes). had the fur market held like it did with $100 eastern coyote prices, I imagine guys would have come east. who would want to trap wimps instead of blimps? my first trip to southern new mexico I was shocked to see full grown feb coyotes were barely bigger than red fox, maybe 17 lb average. I actually started luaghuing when I saw them. they pissed like scared puppys when they saw me, just like the drikheads do now. can you imagine a bunch of 17 lb peeing coyotes thinking they threw me out of new mexico, bwahahaha.

Yes, you certainly are Bob. And you'll most likely be around for a while yet. To the ire of some no doubt. ;D Now if my scanner would work you could all see Pam back in her "Charlies Angels" influenced fashion days.
