On fur work, we (or at least I) become somewhat complacent, and tend to set up locations in the same general way, using sets that produce to take the most animals.
But what about those coyotes that 1) you need to catch (ADC work) and 2) those "wise" ones?
Do you set up the same- or do you change methods and sets?
On ADC work, here I have a big advantage with the small farms, if their is an ADC complaint, its a patterned coyote- that is, the farmer tells me pretty much where he is and what he is doing. So I'm right on top of it location wise.
So I know where the coyote is, and what he is doing. My method is to make 2 sets in the area. One a dirthole or stepdown depending on location and my mood- and the other two well blended flat sets. I'll spend more time picking the exact location so each set is located in an area that fits it.
I don't find these coyotes to be spooky or cautious- cause here, they aren't being shot at or harassed, and they return with full confidence.

On the fur line, I get few real diggers- defined as a coyote that every night or more often every night or two, will mess with the set. With most coyotes, and esp on fox, just tossing some dirt over the exposed part works fine...usually in a few nights you have a canine in that location, and the digging stops.
But say it doesn't stop- that on "standard sets", he continues to dig and mess with the set.
What do you do?
Do you change methods- or keep on doing what you are doing?
If I really want to play games with a digger- I find that I go to two types of sets that work pretty well.
1) mound of dirt set. I had an old female that was digging and digging at multiple sets. I had one collar left to put on, and didn't want to change locations or extend the number of traps for 1 coyote. I finally got her by making a big mound set. Took a couple of 5 gal buckets of gopher dirt, made a big mound, and buried a couple of fresh gophers in the mound. No lure, no urine. I just dumped the dirt into a big pile, blew out one side, put in the gophers and set the trap. 2 days later there she was. I've used this same set several times since, with good results.
2) A couple times I've used a well blended trap, and just coyote urine. I'll usually set the trap where I want it, with no urine the first couple of days, then give the backing- usually a small weed clump- a shot of urine. Last time I used this- we still had digging on and off for a week at the other sets in the area, and ten the "blind" set worked.
Yet on the other hand, the worst digger I ever had was a collared female- and finally got her with the same sets she had been digging at just by persevering.
So - whats your go to set when you got one you really need to (or want to) catch?
Same old or something "special"?
