Day dreaming time:
Pretty well everyone has seen the Hawbaker trapping book. Some of the information and methods are dated but others still have their place on the line.
If you were going to make a Hawbaker set on your line this year which one would it be?

The one where you cut a hole in the top of a barrel and cover it with wax paper so the muskrats fall through when they climb on top is the best.

more than likely the suicide mink set and debris sets.....hard not to use some form of set Hawbaker put in print...... the man published a ton of sets and wasnt afraid to credit another mans name, in his books or quarterlies he surly produced allot of information, and pleasurable reading for the trapper..........jim

Ross, does that barrel set really work or are you pulling our leg?
I always wanted to try it in my younger days.

Grandpap used a barrel set for rats, no waxed paper, he used an inner tube with a slice in it. I have not tried it because not legal. He was damage control trapping his own farm. Lots of muskrats at that time, a guy could put up near 100 rats from a walking line.
Did the Hawbaker readings credit who "invented" it?

Can't tell you if it works or not Dave I never got around to trying it. I can tell you what happens when you throw a gas grill tank or unopened can of beans in a campfire... what happens when you shoot a soft drink fountain CO2 tank with a 30 caliber. Likely I was just one or two weeks of boredom on the farm away from finding out if it works or not.
Maybe the same guy invented it that came up with the penny in a glass bottle to catch a coon.
Trapping North American Furburers is a great book to have when you're growing up. I've used the catfish doughball bait recipe made with cornmeal and mollasses. I made a batch of that up one summer and rode my threewheeler down to the creek. First cast out caught a 10 pound carp. Went home and cut it up with a spade and threw it in a pickle jar to watch it turn to oil all summer. Cheap entertainment.
