I bought a bucket of rat footholds at the trapping convention and acquired a dozen jumps. I haven't used jumps in close to 30 years. I think I've only owned a couple. They seem a little too sturdy for rats on a front foot. Am I wrong? Is there any fur bearer they are particularily suited for?
I also got a couple of #1 coils. The pan is stamped W A Gibbs and Son Single Grip Chest(ER?) PA. The pan is unusual compared to a Victor. Is there anything "special" about them?
A few of the Victor long springs have an extra "arm" perpedicular to the cross piece. It has holes for nails on each side. I'm guessing that it was designed for marten. Any thoughts?

I am guessing the perpendicular arm on your longsprings was a bracket for the stoploss spring and arm.

I use all jump traps for martens here in Maine. The animal doesnt freeze down to a jump like they do to a body gripper. John

FA: It could be. I didn't know that they made #1 with stoploss. If so, the seller took them all off!

The jump Isn't to big for a front foot rat catch. You will get a high shoulder catch and the heavy trap will assure quick drowning. Set them so the rat will approach between the jaws and so the rat won't approach over the spring.
Fish Is probably correct In his thinking that the trap was a stop loss with the arm removed.

I just don't like those small jump traps. Seems more times than not on the waterline, if therei s an empty trap, its a jump. I think they are just so inherently unstable, that a rat often tips them over.

i have found a very good use for the #1 jump. It works very well on those floating feed beds. It's light and works pretty good. I have had good luck using them on the rat house, but there you have a good base to work with.

The 1 1/2 jump killed alot of mink in this country before the coils came out. I still like the #1 jump in houses for rats with 4 feet of cable attached. They take them right down the hole without tangling on alot of grass. I believe the biggest problems with the jumps, were the springs wore out and didn't require much power to pull out of, especially coon. The B&L springs seemed to last much longer than the Victors.

My biggest problem with the small jumps, is that they are much more unstable thatn a coil or a long spring.
Set all three down on the gropund- and press on the traps on the corners- its easy to see the jump traps are just "tippy".
I think Rally is right on the coon losses, but feel on the rats that many times they tip the trap when climbing over it, and get a hair hold, etc- resulting in pullouts.

These jumps are no differnt then any other type trap you just have To BED the trap to make It stable.

yes beav- they are different- when you can wiggle a coil or place a longspring- and the set is made in a sec- vs wiggling, pushing, bedding, etc, etc.
And then you still get a miss in the trap. My jumps have strong springs- and they also are the least effective rat traps I own. I'd set them before a #1 ls- but its not much more than a toss up.
I think there is a good reason they quit making them.

I have a dozen or so #1 jumps that will be used for under the ice sets. After you set the trap get a medium size stick and cut a notch crosses ways through it a little and place the lip of the spring into it. Now you made a platform out of the trap, no bedding problem. then bait the stick, place set below ice into water. I learned this not long ago and can't wait to try it out. I bought a truck load of traps from an ole' timer and their were several brand new jumps in the mix so I hope to put them to use.
