How many of you guys go out before season and put in your dirtholes and post sets then on opening day put in the trap??? Is this a good idea or a waste of time? woody

I will most likely have half of my holes dug and beds dug before opening day, especially in places where I am resetting from this year.

Never bothered. I do use sites from the previous year frequently. All I need to do is clean debris from trap bed and hole and set. I do sometimes get coon sets ready before season. I hate trying to find a drag to wire off to while I'm setting traps. I already have started working on my drag stack for next year.

Dirtholes?? Never...I like having a fresh dirthole when I'm placing a trap in front of it...With k9's it's different than coon...K9 sets are placed on location to begin with so there is little reason to "Train" a k9 to come to your sets...Within 3 days, the k9 will have discovered every set you have anyway...If he hasn't, you're NOT on location and need to pull that trap shortly thereafter...With that said...I do believe that you can train a k9 to come to a "Baitpile" or carcus...
If the reason for predigging is simply to save time on opening day, It's a good concept in theory buut I don't think it saves time in the long run...
Coons are a different story...

I think it is a waste of time- for the most part.
In farm country, things change drastically in the fall.

I am doing it for canines strictly because last year I only got out 1/3 of my sets the first day, I want to maximize the number of sets I get out the first day, since I will trap a lot of the same territory to start with, I want those sets in the ground and then start heading for the new spots the second or third day. I want to get out the same number of sets this year, but spread over twice as many farms, now that I know how these freaking PA fox work. ;D

Never on k9 sets but I do get things ready on the coon line. I put out my coon boxes and drowner rigs in October. I bait my boxes once a week, I beleive this really ups my coon catch.

I will get my coon line ready while doing pre-season scouting, but that is all. nothing more. I think I will put in pvc pipes early this year so they get used to them.

Yes I am, last year I waited till the 1st of November to start setting, I think I lost some critters doing that, and I know I lost some good days. This year the steel is going in opening day.

I've been debating myself over this issue since I started trapping 10 years ago or so. lately, I've been starting later, but the weather usually stinks then. glycol is helping!

I am going to try some glycol this year as well as waxed dirt, but I am begining to see from the auction sales results, that I am not losing anything starting earlier. The weather is a consideration, but if I start earlier, I will not even think twice about pulling out completely during deer season and water trapping till the hunters are back in front of the TV set. ;D
