Look at it this way 17 years is a long life for a dog you were lucky to have him that long.I lost my pointer at 11 years old and it was very tough on me.I soon got another dog and it helped some.Right now I have a lab that is 3 years old and he thinks he is human he sleeps in the recliner and on our bed and goes everywhere with us my wife even gives him a bath once a week.Gonna be a sad day for sure around my house when something happens to him

I truly know how you feel Steve, At the time we had no kids so Mark our 2 yr old Chocolate Lab was it. We got compliments on his desire and good citizenship many times over. On his second b'day we had to put him down. He had a severe case of Lupus. Vet said Lupus in dogs were around 1 in a million and this was my very first Lab. I cried so hard at the vets office. That was 6 years ago seems like yesterday. Never claimed to be tough,I sure wasn't that day, could'nt be I lost a part of me. Damn dogs!

Dang... I'm all teared up. Sorry to hear about your loss - only seeing beagle a few times, I could tell he was a special dog to you two. 17 years - Wow. Dogs for the most part do not live that long, and beagles even more so. I've got two dogs now that are both around 5, it's hard, but a fact - I'll be losing them in the next 10 years. My sons will be just old enough to feel the loss and understand they are gone.
