Got back late saturday from the Western NTA, what a good time it was. The kids loved the free fishing deal and all came back with a new fishing pole, thanks to the NTA and the montana trappers assc!!! They had fun catching those bullheads. Wife found some montana silversmith jewerly made her happy!!! I had the pleasure of talking with some great trappers and good demos I attended. Picked up some needed supplys and had decent prices on all things purchased. Miles City is a great town and the scenery was good too! Ate supper at the Cattle AC and it has excellent food. I hope all that attended enjoyed it as much as many I talked too.

I was there from Thursday night to Sunday morning and like tc35 I had a great time. I did some tailgating and did well and picked up a few items for this fall. The facilities were great but I believe the turnout was low, but I never heard the final count. I know most dealers I talked with would certainly have liked to see more people. The only thing I can fault is the rodeo, which was held on Friday night, and I don't blame either the NTA or the MTA for that. Besides just being porely run, there was an incedent with a horse breaking one of its front legs and how they delt with that was extreamly poor. A lot of people left the grandstands after that because they were so sickened by how it was handled, or perhaps I should say by them NOT handling it. That horse suffered way to long. Greenhorn

I don't know Bob. Here's the deal on the horse. They had a contest where a team of 3 would have to hold, saddle, and ride a wild horse. This was a riot and those contestants have got to be crazy to do it. Man but they were really ruffed up trying to handle those horses. There were 3 or 4 teams going at the same time. There was no problem with any of that. It was during the second go-around that one of the horses broke its front leg. Not sure what happened but it had a severe compound fracture right at its knee. There was perhaps 6 to 10 inshes of bone sticking out. The horse was exstremely distressed, as you could imagine, and was really struggling to stay up. Now I know and understand that sometimes stuff happens but you would think they would have wanted to take care of that horse ASAP. The rider in the ring was trying to move the horse to the side of the arena but they continued with the other teams trying to get their horses saddled and ridden as usual. Several times the other teams or horses would bump into the crippled horse causing it that much more suffering. After this event was over they just moved the injured horse along with the other horses into a correl in back. They then continued with the rest of the bull riding rodeo. So you would think that they would take this time to get into the horse correl and put the injured horse down to end its suffering. But they did not do anything to the horse at all. I did see some woman walk around the outside of the corell and observe the horse at one time but that is it, and I could see the area well from where I was sitting. At no time did the rodeo announcer make any mention of the incident or the injured horse. It was as if nothing happened. It was during this time that a lot of people left with rather disgusted looks on their faces. It was not a pertty sight to see that horse suffering for such a long period. Now I'm not usually a softy when it comes to animals but to me that horse should have been taken care of even while in the arena, or at the least ASAP after it was in the correl. Sometime after the rodeo they did put it down as a friend saw them dragging it out of the correl the next morning. Plus you would have thought the announcer would say something of the incident. I have no doubt the rodeo people are great people and that they are very pro trapping but I and many others believe they really handled this situation in a very poor manor. Like I said earlier, I do not hold the NTA nor the MTA any responsibility in this incident and I think they put on a tremendus rendezvous.

bummer. I hope the rodeo was not announced as trapper sponsored ,or anything of the like to where the public would blame it on trapping.

I had a darn good time at the Western. Took a carriage ride around town. Saw where Calamity Jane had her crib. A bridge that Custer rode across and a lot of other interesting things like the trees where the indians buried their dead.
Good BBQ one night, Auction and dinner.
The Range Riders Museum had a heck of a display of old time stuff including pictures of old wolfers and some old wolf traps. They had two old Newhouse trap wrenches that I hear are worth a bundle.
I stayed for the Wolf Trapping Seminar which was excellent. Was way more than just how to bury a trap.

Joel did you get to see Glen Sterlings new wolf/mt lion trap? It is something special!!!! Just an oversized mj600, but with an adjustable pan. I think there will be many looking to buy these for lions in the years to come!!!! Quality iron for the very top of the food chain predators for sure!!!

FWS,
Let's not be so pessimistic. You may be right but the way the damn things are populating they might outgrow the Government!!
TC,
Yeah I saw the "MJ800", it was an impressive trap. The jaws carry a lot of mass. Might be a little slow. Might not be either. I didn't see it dryfire. Good positive lockup. Glen was there.
They had most of the different big traps from the livestock protection models to the Sleepy Creek 41/2.
Quite a few top of the line trappers and quite a few agency people.

Yes spoke with Glen and had a nice talk, that trap will be the ticket for wolf and lion depredation work. I think Jr and Glen will sell quite a few, there will be a collectors numbered addition comming out as well, they will be numbered in the few 100's and each pan will have it's own number. Don't know if they'll do them up on a wood plaque like the 600's or not.
