I like to check my coon line at night for theift reasons an I also like the fact that I am the only one out there no heads turnin and I can leave the truck parked in the middle of the road. I usually start at 2 Am but am expanding my line this yr would like to get done right at daylight or thereabouts. How early is too early on coon traps 1 , 12? Help RR

rr with dogs i have found it depends alot on the weather and moon...as to what time the MAJORITY moves..beginning of season they seem to move early in the night and up till round midnight..(october) and later in season as the temps get colder they seem to move a little later in the night and not roam as much...when the colder weather hits i find the coons go to food and back home no wondering around for them..but in the early part of season they seem to roam around alot more taking them longer to get back home or to a known den..and i have also found it with hounds that when the moon is bright the coons move later in the night say 12 am on...and when theres a warm day with a semi warm night in the middle of a cold spell the coons will run like crazy...i hope i have helped you with your question..seems like a long answer but i felt like typing....

Checking traps at 2A.M. you are going to have catches after you check. I've seen coons out at dawn.If theft is a problem your going to need drowners . You will also need to keep your sets as unnoticible as you can. On dirt roads it's better to stop in the middle of the road. You get dirty looks but there is no pullover trail for a thief to spot.

This aint gonna help much,RR,but in an agricultural setting,I check my traps all hours of the day and night;when I check in the dark or pre-dawn hrs,I bring a rifle and light and am sure to check the trees on my way in and out....many many bonus coon without the hassle of re-makes.

Danny I dont trap dirt roads beacase once I get em set It allways rains an I dont like walkin, too much time, yes checkin at 2 I will catch a FEW coon but if you are gonna run any number of sets you gotta check early if you wanna be done by the time the H.S. theifs get outa bed. Last yr I re ran my line I had caught 2 coon at traps I had checked at 2 AM an this was at 5:30 so I dont mulch bother me to check at 2 anymore. I am thinking of starting my run around 1 this yr an recheckin the first few stops on the way back. RR

Well, then you may want to be REEAAAL sneaky.......
It is only legal here if I bring my dog with;without a dog it would be illegal here as well, sorry about that.
