What a horrible summer but it sure is flying by.
I've got guys that haven't got 1st crop of hay in yet, and guys that were still planting corn in middle of june-= but at least here all the crops did get in. Haven't hardly trapped gophers since te spring, inl ast 4 weeks been out 4 days I think. Do have some land to get to now, but what an unusual year. Harvest is going to be, Im afraid, even later than last 2 years- and those two years were latest I've seen in decades. All we can do is hope for a dry fall, and crops out as soon as possible.
coyotes always on my mind. In particular, I continue to be amazed by my dog, Mickey in his reactions ot things. And how in a wild canine like a coyote, these reactions and attentiveness must be much, much higher.
A couple of observations:
1) anything new in the neighborhood that he sees, he reacts to, and in a neophobic way. for example, the neighthbor across the street put her red recycle bin, something Mickey sees constrantly and ignores, on a small cart. Mickey was beside himself, over that "new" appearance in his territory.
2) He was sleeping in the back yard, under the picknic table, when someone walked a dog across the street. 100% he could not see, or hear it. the dog went by (100 yards or so away) and a few seconds later, Mickeys head goes up, he sniffs, and goes running to the fence to see that dog. No breeze to speak of- 100 yards away...he knew.
3) He went in backyard, and junped a bunny. for days, everytime let out, he would immediately go to that exact spot, and start hunting.
And thats my housedog...lol
imagine a coyotes senses.

So 3 months to season. Not much done, but over the years less to do each year. did get my peat bought. last year ran out with 8 bales, so 11 this year. Did something new- usually just cut slices in the bag to dry in a shed- this year cut out a window on each side, and taped a piece of screen to it- should be the best method by far to dry them.
Adding some traps- look at a bunch of dogless- really like the Jrs and think it might be the top of line in dogless, but too pricy for me when I really liked the Bridgers as well. Not too impressed with the new monty dogless.
Decided was done with students (so hard to plan in advance, never knowing where i'll be etc) and haven't taken any last couple of year,s but a regular custumer and friend over the years from WI wanted to go, so one more.
Last year was the worst of any year weatherwise....looking back at pics far more had snow i nthem, than not. So...unless we get that big dump early, this year can't be worse than last.
Won't trap any coon delibrate- I could live with the pricve if we had enough coon to bother- but with the low, low numbers here, just not worth a coonline- and as I found out last year, my waterlines have all gone ot hell insofar as populations it seems of eveything at all time low- and thats after not trapping those creeks for a couple of years.
From here on out, I might just trap 100% coyotes. and thats okay.
Hows everyones summer/plans going?
