Nice pics in your thread. You start your trapping early, wich date? I see that you don't worry to set near of buildings, I will try this spots, not just far in fields, near the brush.
Musher, I'm not in Gaspe, just beside, in "bas-St-Laurent"

Yes, I start early. I'm ahead in both numbers and $ by doing so- any early coyotes are just bonus- same thinking as with coon.
One of the keys, is knowing what they eat. Here, a study showed the #1 food in the scat was voles- followed by odd thigns such as insects, fruit, vegtable matter, beef & venison (though to be more scavenged than killed by the amount), and also mice, etc listed separate. What this means- is that my coyotes are hunting in the fields, in the grassess far more than the timber.
a thing to keep in mind, is that, IMO, coyotes will, if unhrried and at ease, follow lines as much sa any animal does. Even a line between old hay and new even if both same length. You will see a lot of my locations are at attractions (many if not most shown in pictures to keep locals in the dark a bit) but the set up point is a line of some sort.

Interesting that my god child lead bicycle tours in your region for two summers a few years back ;oursnorb. It is a beautiful region with many different biomes so close together. I knew one of the bio's that studied the possibilities of the re-introduction of muskox for that region east of you.
Having talked to some NB trappers your coyote is a lot different that what us westerners are use to dealing with.

In what way are they different? Talking to people from all around the country including much of Canada....a coyote is a coyote is a coyote. While their adaptive behaviors are different (Food sources, range, etc) their innate behaviors remain the same.

Yes, we have abeautiful region with coyotes, population are lower that you but decent(I think). Big number trappers are seldom seen here, but many snaremens with same techniques, baits with snares around. For me, footholds traps are a precious tool and we can vary ours installations with.

On behaviour that is different is at dusk those PQ coyotes probably don't talk as much as western coyotes. Calling back and forth and the meeting each other from 1/2 mile distances and all that retorick that happens then. Are you out at dusk Tman what do your do compared to some far western dogs.? get the yepping and yapping meetings etc ?
