a good read- it would be interesting to run that type of registered line. Sometimes I think I'd like it, yet at other times I think differently.

I could see a registered line, one could manage it, here in the states no way. You leave something for seed and next trapper or darn government trappers come and trap them.... THe article Jim posted very true on benefits of trapper and trapping...

Many look at the Canadian form of management and government as socialistic and too liberal (not trying to be political but probably will be). Yes in the states we have a more of a free for all attitude regarding many aspects of resource management and if you would run a long line here that covers many square miles with low prices one would be considered quite stupid by many. The fact that Canada has adopted a resource management approach to resource management and that includes the lean years as well speaks highly to me regarding their approach to many aspects of their culture and society.

Well for sure Bryce it is a big challenge in low beaver prices, I have had to find a market for the beaver meat, otherwise I am losing money. Between the pelt, the castor and the meat I can still make it work. Castor is way up, I am tapping into a meat market that can take everything I produce, the weak link is the pelt. From LM size down it cost me money to harvest them.
The upside can be paying beaver gig. Always end up with a couple each year that can make it profitable. The way we manage beaver here in Ontario is kind of unique we are the only province (state) with a mandatory harvest. Most others have the registered line system but not all. The difference in Ontario is the mandatory quota.
I wrote this story to try and get it published in a magazine outside of trapping. Kind of as a positive article in mean stream but had no luck or traction. Jim
