A cottager on a line I trap asked me to thin out the bears around his camp. He has 3 grandkids that are there quite often and last summer he had a bird feeder that got hit a few times.
Another moose hunter in the same area asked the same thing. The moose hunters don't like competition for their game and bears are as well liked as wolves.
There's not much money in bears but it is enjoyable.
I baited a couple of weeks ago and set one week ago. Out of 7 baits three got hit. Two of those hit just got hit once. Another was hit regularly and I set it up. The result was three bears. Of the three, only one worth getting the camera out. I didn't take any photos in the bush. It's buggy and I have quite a few bear photos already. They also didn't have any size to them.
This one is a fairly typical spring sow. She is slightly larger and I guesstimate her at 150-175 pounds. I hauled her out alone but my wife helped me load it in the truck! (I know. I married well.)
I use a pulp hook in the "Y' of the jaw to haul them. Bears are quite loose and tough to drag. There is nothing solid to hold on to.
I caught her in an aldridge foot snare. She did a job on the wire but she wasn't going anywhere.
Along with a very good pelt, she has a good set of claws on all four feet. I also wanted a few dogs in a photo!
After I skin out the feet, while it is in the back of the truck, I use an old winch to haul it up on the outside of the fur shed.
Then the rest of the skinning gets done.
I can tag one more off that line. I set a new bait today that has been hit nightly for a few days now. I'm hoping to be tagged out on that line tomorrow.
Thanks for looking.
